Law on war weapons

“International humanitarian law contains basic principles and rules governing the choice of weapons and prohibits or restricts the employment of certain weapons.“ (International Commitee of the Red Cross)

They are a part of the law on the conduct of war. 

There is not only one law, instead, there is a collection of treaties with varying support.

It grows out of concerns for effects on victims or the escalation of a conflict.

Some weapons fundamentally change nature/scale of conflict.

Some weapons are unnecessary gruesome for their effectiveness.

Some weapons pose big hazards to the civilian population

Important things to remember:

Signing a treaty is not equal to it being ratified.

Ratifying is also not equal to complying to the treaty either.

Plus, all treaties have breaches.
