You know, I was so excited about posting a WIP on an actual Wednesday, and then realised it's Tuesday... derp.
Tagged a few days ago by @wilvarin-chan! <3 Thank you, lovely! Tagging whoever else feels so inclined to participate - yes, that means you, too!
I'm kinda trying to hyperfocus on my original novel, so have a snippet from partway through instead of the normal fanfiction offerings! Don't @ me for one character name dammit - it might be a placeholder name. Or I might just keep it when it goes to publication. idek anymore.
Likewise, it didn’t take Keldae long to find the room in the inn where the attempted murder had taken place. Mistress Airna hadn’t yet had the room cleaned — either that, or her remaining servants were too afraid to enter the room, full of superstitions. Yet Keldae wasn’t the first to enter the room — a man stood there, with long blond hair and a cropped beard. His eyes, normally full of mirth, were grim when he turned at her footstep. “You heard the rumours too?” he asked.
“I didn’t expect to see you here, Bard,” Keldae greeted her old comrade as she looked around the room. “I hear rumours of a storyteller travelling with the girl — I presume he was one of your devoted?”
Bard shook his head. “He was good enough to be one of mine, but no, he wasn’t. One of my devoted in the town was confused by the entire thing.” He sighed and ran a hand through his long hair. “I assume the assassins were yours?”
“My devoted — the ones I can reach, anyway — are under strict orders to not harm the girl. I would call a pot of wraithsbreath tea a deliberate attempt to harm, wouldn’t you?” Removing one of her gloves, Keldae set a hand on the bed and frowned. “They were here, with the girl. They tried to suffocate her when the tea failed.”
“I’m sorry, did you say an entire pot of wraithsbane tea failed to kill this girl?” Bard blinked. “You’ve used less than that, with far more murderous success.”
“No, two pots of wraithsbreath tea failed to kill the girl. Either they were inept, or our girl is very lucky,” Keldae murmured. “My sources tell me that she showed signs of being a lifebinder when she was mage tested.”
“That might explain how she pulled that miracle off,” Bard nodded. “I’ve never seen a poison that could kill a lifebinder. Is she one of Rahmyah’s?”
“I don’t think so. She’s been raised in Reitanar, and you know their laws on devotion to anyone besides Arethana,” Keldae muttered. “Now hush and let me go through the memories of this room.” She went quiet for a moment, listening to the memories the bed had witnessed. “A man came in here — a sellsword, I would guess, or a disenfranchised knight. He threw the male assassin off the girl and killed him, then tried to capture the female assassin. She chose to kill herself with her own knife.”
“Coward,” Bard muttered.
Keldae nodded in agreement. “But they did have a tracker with them. They tested the girl’s blood — I can still smell it in here. The golden light is true; this is our girl.”
“A tracker? So they may be Elitaran,” Bard said, looking around. He dropped to his knees and looked under the bed, then sat back up. “What happened to the tracker?”
“It fell from the woman’s hand. Is it not where you’re standing?”
“No. Someone else must have taken it. Can you see who?”
Keldae focused for a moment longer, then shook her head. “No. The memory ends with the girl falling unconscious. I can see no more after the man rescues her.”
“Perhaps the man took the tracker then,” Bard mused as he got to his feet. “Stars help us if he knows what it is and how to use it.”
it's a first draft and I'm still working on it. I might contract out the editing once this fucking first draft is finished. Over 100K words AND I'M STILL NOT DONE. And it'll be the first of a duology, if not a trilogy. Help.
