The hug

You’d arrived late morning. Earlier than you told anyone you would. You carried a strange weight in your chest and your copy of Definitely Maybe under your arm. The record sleeve was worn at the corners, the kind of wear that only comes from years of being handled, played, carried from one apartment to the next. You held it like it was part of you. And I n a way, it was.
The hotel wasn’t remarkable at all. Concrete, glass, quiet. A little faceless, like most places that host people who live on the road. But it was the place. The one where he was staying. That was enough. You joined a loose group of others. Like you, they were just fans standing around, killing time.
Some were talkative, trading stories or speculating. Others, like you, kept mostly to themselves. Everyone glanced toward the hotel doors too often. Everyone flinched a little every time they opened.
The hours crawled. You’d expected that. You watched the sunlight shift on the pavement, ate a snack you didn’t taste, checked your phone, didn’t read anything. But even as your body got tired you never considered leaving. You weren’t entirely sure what you were hoping for. Just a moment, maybe. One moment.
Late afternoon tipped toward evening. The sky cooled to that washed-out color that happens right before it gets truly dark. People had come and gone. The group had shuffled, stretched out, thinned and regrouped. Your nerves, stretched taut for so long, had just started to fray into something quieter when the doors opened again.
And he walked out.
He had a few people with him: A tour manager, maybe, someone from the hotel, a personal assistant-type hovering just close enough to steer the crowd. They were moving with intention. Liam wasn’t. He looked like he’d been doing this his whole life, which, in a way, he had.
He gave a wave, and it was enough to spark motion. The group stirred, people shifted, someone said his name a little too loud.
He didn’t flinch. Just stopped and started signing. One by one, things were passed to him. shirts, sleeves, scraps of paper, phones shoved forward. He signed them all, mostly in silence, occasionally glancing up to say something dry or offhand that got a laugh.
And then he looked at you.
And you, who had waited so calmly, so patiently, fell apart.
Your chest tightened in an instant, breath caught somewhere high and shallow. Your hands began to shake. Your knees felt like they weren’t entirely attached. You couldn’t lift your arms, couldn’t make your mouth work. It wasn’t just nerves. It was like the weight of everything he’d meant to you. The music, his voice, what those songs had gotten you through. Everything had arrived all at once, with nowhere to go.
You didn’t try to get his attention. You couldn’t. You just stood there, frozen.
But he noticed.
Even with his people guiding him, someone murmuring, “We’ve gotta keep this moving,” he glanced up, caught sight of you, and didn’t look away.
He stepped toward you, brushing past the person who tried to nudge him along.
“You alright, love?” he asked.
His voice was low and rough, quieter than you’d expected, but clearer somehow too. You felt it more than you heard it. You tried to respond. Tried to nod, to smile, anything.. But nothing came. Your eyes stung. You could barely breathe. You were humiliated by how visible it all was, how raw.
And then, without pause or hesitation, he reached out and pulled you into him.
He hugged you. Fully. Properly.
His arms were strong around you, one wrapped firm across your back, the other resting near your shoulder. He held you like someone who’d done this before. Not the hug part, but the seeing-someone-fall-apart part. He held you like he knew what it was to need that kind of grounding.
You weren’t sure how long you stood there, your forehead tucked near the collar of his coat, the world around you blurring into vague sound. His breath was steady. His coat smelled faintly of cold air and something warm, cotton and skin, maybe smoke. His voice came again, softer now, just for you.
“S’alright. Don’t worry. Just breathe, yeah?”
Your eyes were wet. You nodded against him.
“You’re alright. I’ve got you.”
Someone behind him called again—more urgent this time: “Liam, we’ve really gotta—”
He didn’t move. Didn’t even look back.
“She’s alright,” he said, not to them. To you. “You’re alright.”
His hand stayed on your back, calm and solid, until your breath started to settle. Until the trembling dulled to something quieter. You pulled back a little, and he let you, but only when you were ready.
He looked at you, then. Really looked at you. His expression wasn’t pitying. It wasn’t awkward. It was just honest. Clear. Like he saw exactly what had happened, and he didn’t think any less of you for it.
You managed to lift the record.
He took it carefully, like it was something precious. Signed it without saying a word, and when he handed it back, your fingers touched for the briefest second. Just enough for you to know it had all really happened.
Then he nodded once, almost imperceptibly. Like a quiet promise.
Then he turned and walked on, finally letting his people guide him wherever he was going. The moment was over. But something in you had shifted. Calmed. Settled in your chest like the slow return of gravity.
It wasn’t the autograph you’d remember.
It was the way he’d stopped. The way he’d seen you. And the way he didn’t let go until you were okay.
there's nothing better than a warm hug! YCH commission for @mo-the-vagabond and @waflafel
Dovey: I don’t know how you do that.
Lesso: Do what?
Dovey: Make everything sound like a threat. That man looked like he was about to piss himself, and all you did was ask him to step aside so that we could get past. Even when I actively try to sound threatening, no one takes me seriously.
Lesso: That’s because you look and sound like the human personification of a warm hug.
Don't you know girls have to fool people every day of their lives if they want to get anywhere?
