Although not strictly a horror film, it did indeed terrify me as a child, and I thought it should be recognised and appreciated in my review as one of the 50s all time Sci-fi classics. War of the worlds 1953 is easily one of my all time favourites during the 50s Sci-fi phenomenon. Where Hollywood explored the atomic age and invasions from space. Based on the infamous broadcast by HG Wells, the film depicts the arrival of Martians from the planet Mars and humanity's efforts to survive their relentless invasion and goal to reign over the earth. The models and puppetery are outdated and clearly can see the wires in the well-lit scenes, the atmosphere they give clearly hasn't lost its gratification or awe. The designs of the Martian ships are still to this day one of the best concepts ever made in cinema, highly recognisable and instantly chilling when hearing and seeing the eye-stalk begin to pulse and search for its victims. War of the worlds is an absolute classic film, which I can easily watch on repeat and never lose focus or attention throughout, there have been many renditions of HG Wells broadcasting but none personally have come close to the 50s adaptation, even though there have been more accurate versions of the original broadcast made, as the Martians were in Tripods (Spielberg adaptation) and not the classic flying machines. However this film does indeed create its own legacy, will be remembered always as one of the all time greats in Sci-fi horror.
