        “look, it’s not that i don’t like rimmer, it’s just that everything he does pisses me off and i can’t stand being around him.” lister looks up from the ground, where he’s been picking aimlessly at his sock for the last few minutes. “pass me another, will ya?” he asks, gesturing to tom to toss him a peanut, and leans forward, preparing to catch it in his mouth. “come on. i’m sure you have people on here like that. just.... infuriating smeggers, you know.”

     “ It’s in my job description to be paranoid, Mister Paris, ”     drawled the station’s chief of security.  “ And a good thing, too. A member of the maquis, I see? Hm. ”

Odo scrolled with almost infuriating idleness through the pilot’s records, tipping his chin with all due mistrust.  “ And not your first offense toward the Federation, either, it seems. ”

His eyes flicked up over the padd to consider Tom Paris.

“ You’ve taken a considerable risk in coming here, today. ”  Odo leaned forward meaningfully. Was it only a trick of the light, or did his height increase, ever so slightly?  “ Are you here out of desperation? Or guilt? ”

        “now what? now -- i mean....” rimmer trails off. “why should we just settle, right? for being so pathetically underestimated. for being..... being........” he paces, clenching and unclenching his fists as he does so. “a failure! i mean, it was one mistake, wasn’t it? it wasn’t my fault that lister wasn’t there to help fix the drive plate! so really, the deaths of all those people aren’t really on me. right? and i think i’ve done more than enough to make up for it, so i don’t really know why i can’t seem to move past this, i mean, they has to be more, right?” he stops, turns back to tom. “and you, i mean, it must be really frustrating to know you’re going to be stuck out here away from earth for probably the rest of your life and not get a chance to even make something of yourself.” it’s an insult, yes, but it’s directed at himself just as much ( if not more so ) than at tom.

         "alright, so... you're telling me that YOU’RE the... navigator... pilot... person... of this vessel?" Acting Senior Commanding Officer Arnold J Rimmer ( ™ ) is... certainly having a hard time fully accepting this. "you?" he looks at tom with nothing short of disdain. “i mean... that's all very well and good i suppose, but your ship is hardly... impressive." he glances around. no matter that voyager is very impressive. he's not going to let himself be one-upped by someone he's just met. “it’s not really much of an accomplishment, really.”
