Sketch commission for @neathbound-fiends of their character Warren and @wildergrimm's Cerine! The posing was a lot of fun to figure out, hugs are always lovely to draw.
If you have an OC at Benthic, they probably know Warren. She haunts the halls to go hang out with one of her besties (scary middle aged licenciate full of teeth) but occasionally she wanders just to wander. There is a pretty good chance they are aware of her existence because there aren't many other blind teens who've been coming to hang out for almost a decade and are the unofficial mascot of the worst behaved students that Benthic College has to offer
Accessibility in Silvering
Okay so by in-game descriptions, Silvering is a very sight-based profession (especially considering the profession item is LITERALLY a pair of glasses, and the way to enter is through a reflective surface and seeing into the other side of it). Given that this will not work for Warren, I've been thinking about ways to get around that that aren't in direct contradiction with the game itself and the ways that she adapts the profession to suit her and accessibility. So far we have the following thoughts:
The first hurdle is getting into Parabola itself. Typically this is done through the use of honey or the spectacles, but I don't think most people are giving a kid drugs. In this case, we're leaning towards the cosmogone having some special property (the Parabolan sun is cosmogone, isn't it?) that allows easier access in. To this end, her sight cane has a cosmogone ferrule for contact and filtering Parabola through it, so that may be the in she needs. Contact with the mirror. That whole woowoo "Just Feel It" takes awhile for her because she's not known for being patient, but eventually it becomes more a matter of realizing the timing of it than the feeling. Recognize when the barrier is weak and strike to cross before the Is has the chance to realize it's lost you
The second hurdle is that Parabolan text focuses heavily on what you see for getting around (having to look at your hand for the compass, and sighting the storm bird, and whatnot). This one I think is the easiest to get around, insomuch as she can just rely on the other senses for it, and that Parabola can sense your intentions (like when it shifts the terrain to be steeper any direction you intend to go when hunting). Listening to the sound of the warblers calling out, and the grasses muttering underfoot, and her body singing as she wanders along to orient her to her surroundings. Feeling the terrain shifting beneath and ahead of her feet, changed by her path and the cane she taps out the way ahead and confirms it to her will--also helped by the cosmogone ferrule being the part literally touching where she's trying to alter
The third hurdle is, more than anything, that Parabola operates on a different set of logic, and has a will of its own that it wants to force on you as much as you want to force yours on it. This one is more a case of mind over matter than anything. She just has to be more confident and strong-willed than Parabola is, and occasionally that she must be coaxing and tricky to get it to do what she wants and not impede her. Luckily she is extremely stubborn and also extremely prepared to pull some Bullshit to make it work for her. I'm not worried about this one at all
The fourth hurdle is that there are many things in Parabola that Want To Hurt You and also that Want To Get Out Of Here Real Bad. Being taught Silvering by a tiger who is your brother is helpful for being too snacist (snake racist) to cut a deal with the Fingerkings, but doesn't do much for things like the Pinewood Sharks or other Reflections or even just other tigers she's not friends with. There is, unfortunately, not a ton that can be done for this, I don't think. This is the same as having to face the dangers in London proper--be wily, be prepared to do whatever it takes to escape danger, always be ready for battle
The fifth hurdle is that getting back OUT is gonna be really tricky. Ordinarily, the game has you just look out and see what's happening and where you'll be going. Since she can't do this, she isn't left with many options beyond listen really closely and see if you can figure out where you are (doesn't tell you who or what or where for the most part; bad option), or having to ask someone for a description every time (relies on having someone else with her always, also relies on them being reliable and having her best interest at heart and telling a whole and accurate picture; bad option), or only ever entering and exiting through like one or two VERY specific mirrors that she's set up herself and knows will not be moving (requires initial set up, only reliable in places she knows no one will be changing or damaging anything; not a great option, but probably the best one)
You raise your cane above your head, resplendent and sharp as it wasn't before. It has transformed from one form of protection and guidance to another--you carry a cosmogone sword, and it knows the target it seeks.
Plunge it without hesitation; let it meet its mark like the saints before you.

I decided that perfect was the enemy of done so while it isn't perfect and I'm still not 100% happy, I still wanted to draw something for this event!
Hi I am interested in hearing more about your kidnapping au 👁️ not terribly familiar with your characters yet but from the post it struck me as such a fun story.. I love when a character is trying to fix themself and doing it by harming another. And the idea of a gilded cage, and a child as a prized possession instead of a person.
Okay, SO!! quick doodle of the players in this
Awhile ago I was talking to the besties about OC similarities, and the fact that Elliott and the Sycophant don't actually line up super well, but they did share the sentiment of growing up under a mother who did not love them but sought to mold them into something they weren't to suit her own needs and had an overly idealized view of their fathers that didn't actually match up to the man but to the hope for something better. They ended up branching opposite directions in their respective upbringings: the Sycophant still wants to be the child whose parents love her, and Elliott wanted to be the parent who loved his child
So the question came around of what they would think of each other if they knew these similarities (and knew each other at all), and Elliott would be extremely sympathetic and want to discuss it. It would simply kidnap Warren
It feels this is truly the most pragmatic solution to everyone's problems. It wants to be a mother*, and Elliott's effusive praise about the joys of parenthood and how vastly his life has improved since he became Warren's father convinced it that she is the key to that, so she will simply take her. All his waxing poetic about how fulfilling it is to raise a child, how he finds no greater joy in life, are ample justification that since this child fixed him, this child will fix it also, and he will have the opportunity to get the best part all over again: raising a child! She gets to skip the drudge work and get to the part she wants (owning child) and he gets to do the fulfilling work, so really everyone is happy ^-^
The struggle is that, obviously, Elliott does not want it to take his child, nor does Warren want to be taken (nor is she given any say in the matter). Being told "I'll give you a letter attesting to your upstanding character so you can have your choice of any child in all of the Neath" does not help the fact that he already has the child he wants, and she's a rowdy little goblin of a teenager that he's raised for the last eight years and loves more than life itself
But it isn't taking no for an answer. If he will not willingly hand her over, then she will simply take her by force.
She intends to compensate him though, of course. His refusal to name a figure doesn't mean that she won't come to one on its own. What amount does he think he's paid for raising her? It will pay him handsomely to ensure he's compensated for the loss of property and whatever investments he already has into her, to ensure that everything is fair
And, of course, wouldn't this be better for Warren anyway? Elliott is a zailor. He leaves for weeks at a time out to Zee, leaving Warren with family and friends to care for her in the interim. She is home all the time, save for trips to the Hinterlands that it would be happy to take Warren along for. She could have its undivided attention. She could benefit from its wealth. Why settle for one toy when she can buy her the whole stock of the shop? Why settle for poor meals when it can hire the best chef in the Neath to attend to her every meal? Anything she wants it will get for her! Doesn't that sound nice? Isn't that better for her?
The like. the thing that makes me the most fucking Crazy about this is that the Sycophant is SO lonely and SO scared of the future. She KNOWS that her story does not end well, and is desperate for something to change that. If it can't have the love of its parents, then she can try and give that love to something else. It isn't MALICIOUS in any capacity, and that's what's worst!! It GENUINELY BELIEVES this would be better for everyone involved!! She just doesn't view humans as anything really on par with a devil in any capacity. Her idea of what will happen when she 'adopts' Warren is that it will just sort of put her in its house like a piece of furniture or a pet, and by whatever mechanism Warren will just sort of ambiently Fix Her by virtue of being there
It isn't malicious, it just cannot grasp humanity as anything worthy of respect or consideration more than one might give to a particularly clever dog. Warren is lovely, certainly, especially for what she is, but always inherently beneath her and thus not worthy of the dignity to make her own decisions and something to be bought and traded like a possession. It intends to gild her cage, but there is no mistake that this is still a cage and she fully intends to possess her like a pet
Anyway this AU drives me BONKERS to think about. thank you for letting me ramble about them
Warren's Hallowmas...a bunch of grapes <3
Thinking about her again.
