I think many don’t get the poignancy and tragedy of Stefan and Elena’s last conversation before Elena was driven off the Wickery Bridge.
“Lately I feel like every time someone walks out from this house that there’s the chance they may not make it back home.” The saddest part of this is that it was Elena herself who never made it back home. As in home home, to Stefan.
“Well I promise I will do everything in my power to make sure we all come back.” Stefan did fulfill this promise. He did everything in his power to try to save both Matt and Elena. Stefan had always respected Elena’s choices and her asking him to save Matt first was also in a way, part of the promise. Making sure everyone comes back. The tragic thing is, Stefan couldn’t save the person he loves most.
“Just in case there is no later.” Technically, Elena and Stefan were able to talk to each other again after the crash. But in reality, after the crash, things would never be the same again. Their lives together would be altered forever. There was no later. The real Elena never made it back home again. And Stefan gave that Elena her last kiss.
(Basically a time when the writers had it in them to write out beautiful and meaningful scenes like this instead of cheesy, superfluous dialogues that made no bearing to the essence of the story.)
