the fact that Bruce made Jason believe in justice and that they could improve the community and better the lives of the citizens by fighting crime, but when he came back nothing had changed, the rogues were still running rampant, and the Joker didn't have a harsher punishment for torturing him, killing his mom and blowing him up, he was still just getting put on time out at Arkham until he decided to escape again

Jason's life was interrupted too soon and he came back to everything being the same shit as always, the only change was that his father had found a substitute for him

See, here’s where I (respectfully) disagree!

To me, it’s a matter of perspective. “Nothing’s changed” might be true from the outside, but it doesn’t mean “So nothing ever mattered.”

Maybe stopping one murder doesn’t change Gotham City, but it sure as hell changed that one person’s life. Sitting with someone suicidal for an hour doesn’t stop crime, or clean up neighborhoods, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter.

Gotham might be a toxic hellpit, but that doesn’t mean that his work as Robin, all those lives he saved, never mattered. Maybe things are still awful and horrible and need change, but maybe that doesn’t mean failure. Maybe it just means there’s farther to go.

And the community has improved- because the community is made up of people who get to go home to their families who wouldn’t have otherwise

And maybe everything has changed, in a way. I’m not Jewish, but there’s a saying: “If you save a life, you save the world.” Change a life for the better, and you make an entire world better. There’s still hope, and love, and happiness, even if the entire city is a shithole.

Also, maybe the Joker hasn’t been killed, but I’m somewhat against the concept of guilting someone into pre-mediated murder, or the concept that someone ever be required to kill another person in cold blood.

(and I’m not even gonna touch the “Bruce got Tim as a substitute son/Robin” because canon might say the opposite of that but DC canon goes wildly OOC and directly contradicts itself at times, so I suppose it’s fair game)

Tl;dr: Nothing’s changed doesn’t mean that Nothing ever mattered. Journey before destination.

You know, I think I can actually forgive Bruce’s Bad Dad depiction in Gotham War.

This man is HALLUCINATING. He is literally seeing things. He has an alter ego yelling at him to do shit 24/7. He’s genuinely off his rocker. Imagine having a purple furry in your head being toxic and banging on the bars of the gay baby jail you created to put him in. He can get out at any time, he’s just banging on the bars to make some noise.

He also got the Luke Skywalker Bespin Special, and spent like…half a year? a year? Multiple years? Bouncing around the multiverse in a constant fight like a particularly violent bouncy ball.

Fanfic is ABSOLUTELY meant to be fun! and we as authors need to be kicked in the teeth with that reminder every now and then.

I've had several people just this last week alone deride me for writing fanon takes, for daring to suggest a character do something they didn't do in canon, jumping down my throat and telling me my fanon stories were "ruining" canon for others, because I have a responsibility to not influence readers with my horrible, ooc fanon fics.

The reality, anon, is that these are all just stories. Fiction that we write for free, on a website where we're not getting published or making money. You don't owe anyone anything, much less canon purists. If they don't want to read it, nobody is forcing them to?

I get it -- I get that your blorbo didn't do that in canon, or I'm completely crapping on fifty years of canon by having Bruce Wayne deepthroat an alien dick on my tumblr blog. I get that it pisses people off to see others do something they don't agree with, to a character they treasure.

But guess what? You just move on. You don't climb in the post notes and act like an asshole to the OP. You don't hate comment, or subtweet the author on your blog later. You say to yourself, or maybe even to a close friend (privately) "Wow, I don't like that take" and you click the back button and move on with your life.

The fanon vs canon debate on this website gets so intense sometimes. Do what you love, anon -- write your stories the way you like -- and don't let them make you take this any more seriously than you want to.

Bruce gives Jason the mother of all lectures when he finds out about the BOMB in his son’s helmet. It’s three hours long. The PowerPoint has a seemingly infinite amount of slides.

But as time goes on, Bruce keeps thinking about it, and… well, he can’t keep it out of his head. It was absolutely way too dangerous for Jason of course, and he’d never allow his other children to do it, but the Bat’s secret identity cannot be revealed. If it was, it’d put his kids in danger. Nothing is more important than his kids’ safety.

He could make it safe. Make the explosion just large enough to obliterate his body and make him difficult to identify. Maybe it’s actually… a good idea?

3 months later: The Cave Medbay

Jason: Okay old man, easy, that’s it. Two broken arms, huh? Always an overachiever. Let’s get that cowl off you.

Bruce: Don’t.

Jason: Stop your worrying, I know how to avoid the gas and shock system in the cowl.

Bruce: You can’t, because. Because.

Jason: Because…?

Bruce: because I put a bomb in it

6 months later: The Bat Computer

He just walks up straight to the Joker in the middle of one of his meetings (this hinges on him not recognizing Bruce Wayne as Batman right away which I’m rolling with even though I know it’s not always canon) and just. shoots him in the head. that’s it.

goes home, sits down in his bedroom in blood splattered clothes (still in Jason’s funeral clothing?) and goes silent. even alfred can’t coax a word out of him. and the Joker isn’t exactly a priority victim so it’s never traced back to him, but even if it was it wouldn’t matter. Bruce is gone.
