           “not a command, simply an invitation. things are on an extra level of messed up around here. figured those of us that can should team up.” he had no idea how to approach this situation best. monsters of all sorts were everywhere and it was hard to pinpoint what was killing where or track anything. while out and about, he was keeping a bag of nearly all of the types of weapons he owned in case he accidentally ran into something. vampires were the easiest to bait and he figured there wasn’t a shortage of blood around.

            “i don’t want to disrespect the dead either, but if we get some of the fangheads out of here we might at least slow down the bodies dropping with fang marks on them. luring one species at a time seems as good a strategy as any.”

              “in this town? nothing good was bound to happen.” to be honest, he wouldn’t be surprised if zombies popped out of all of the graves and started doing the dance to thriller. still he would have appreciated being able to dig up the bones in peace instead of nearly getting torn open by a group of ghouls. luckily for him, the woman had shown up and helped him get rid of them before they’d gotten more than a cut into his torso. after catching his breath, he had cursed and went back to digging.

                   the casket now visible, he took a break and leaned back against the wall of dirt behind him. wiping some sweat off his brow that was likely a combination of the strain of digging the grave, his body responding to the injury, and the moment he thought he was going to die to ghouls of all things, he smirked up at the woman. “anyway. you looking for bones to burn or are you waiting for a creepy late night tryst with someone?”

          “moreso for you than me. your worry is misplaced.” leah admired the strength and bravery of the humans that seemed to want to stick their nose into everything as much as she could chuckle at their stupidity. taking on monsters automatically stronger than you would only prove successful for so long. it was strange when they travelled on their own, but she supposed that she was the same way a lot of the time since finding out monsters other than vampires existed. 

         “i’m tracking a vampire tonight. they can’t be too far and they might still be hungry. your neck probably seems more inviting than mine.” she had spooked the leech away from a live victim. her call to 911 had slowed the chase, but they couldn’t really hide the trail from her nose.

          “c’mon when it’s awesome it’s awesome.” maybe her humor was too rude or too dark, but the line of what was appropriate to say had been crossed many times in her early adulthood while dealing with all of the drama that surrounded la push and forks. the man in question couldn’t take a hint and that was on him, just like his own blood now was, mixed in with the blood of his victims that night after he’d been decapitated. “a little dark humor to cope with the fact that he’s the end of his string of four bodies through this park?”

         “i really hope this is you telling me that you’re pumped to go out to the bars with me on halloween. because i’m not ready to hang up the cher costume yet.” to be honest, she might try to reuse the outfit for every day wear. yellow was her favorite color and she thought she looked good in it, after all. some fashion statements had to withstand the test of time, right? “it would be a great distraction and reminder of when my life was a lot simpler where i didn’t feel like i should have mixed feelings about such a fun holiday.”

         getting hit on wasn’t entirely uncommon for her, but there was a difference between the older men that frequented the bars that she had often found herself bartending in since she had been back and being approached by a stunning young woman. “don’t give him too hard of a time, seems like he doesn’t have much to hold them in.” she joked with a bit of a smile. “so -- are you flirting with me or are you just looking to have a few more people to have in your emergency contact list now that you’re in devil hills?”

she wasn’t particularly looking forward to find some bones or possessions to light up herself, but she would hold back the nausea and hopefully bite back the looming panic to help charlie. they needed to get out of this place, but now that they were here she felt it was her responsibility to get rid of the ghosts no matter how uncomfortable it would make her. “can’t argue with you there, but we’re not going to give up, right? hope they’re not keeping us in because the things they’re tied to are out in the cemetery and somehow in here.”

the old house had quite the history and from what she had read before coming here, she assumed that there could be at least five vengeful spirits lurking about. “splitting up means covering more ground to find potentially haunted objects -- but i think otherwise it is a bad idea. what do you say? top to bottom or bottom to top?” no crying now, but the tears would come later if things got worse and likely when this was all over.
