Essay “The Dhobi”

The Dhobi is a very hard-working man. In winter as well as in summer he gets up early in the morning. He goes to the nearest river with the bundles of dirty clothes. Sometimes these clothes are carried on the back of a donkey. But very often, he carries them on his own back. He then stands in the river for hours and washes the clothes. In winter he finds the water very cold. In summer he is scorched by the heat of the sun.

Washing clothes is not an easy job. At first he soaks them in liquid soap. Then he steams them on the fire. After that he takes them to the river. There they are washed on large stone or a piece of wood; Then starch is applied to them and they are placed on the ground to dry in the sun. Last of all they are ironed and folded. All this shows that a Dhobi has to work very hard.
