Hey! I knew some beetle which imitated the wasp but i don't remember its name - can you recognize it?

Did you know that the Wasp Beetle (Clytus Arietis) is a small longhorn beetle? Its black and yellow markings are similar to that of a wasp, tricking potential predators into thinking it's more dangerous than it actually is. This mimicry is taken a step further by the beetle's janky, jerky flight patterns and buzzing sounds when threatened. Despite the visual warning signs this beetle is totally harmless...unless you're a birch or willow tree.

Wasp beetle on elderberry, i used to think they were still very beetle like but seeing the picture as a small icon in my gallery i did wonder what wasp that was, good on you pall, good on you. I love mimicry !

From far away I thought an actual wasp had landed on the stairs! Girlie is good at mimicry :)

@feralbiologist submitted: Found this fast friend pretending to be a wasp in Germany! Pretty sure it’s in Clytus, maybe C. arietis? Didn’t have a key on hand.. Weirdly early in the year to see them out & about!
I see nothing but a very handsome wasp here! I wouldn’t mess with this fella!

Sure, it's a wasp beetle, Clytus arietis, which is a type of longhorn beetle. They are nectar feeders, so they're definitely trying to mimic wasps!
