Happy 25th birthday, Wasp Star (Apple Venus Volume 2) !

Released on this day in 2000, Wasp Star is the 12th and final album of XTC, a band who at that point had officially been a duo for a couple of years after Dave Gregory's departure. As the name suggests, Wasp Star has always been envisioned as "the other side" of the Apple, with it being the Aztec phrase for Venus. The recording sessions of this album went almost hand in hand with the ones for AV1, as both were originally conceived as one single project. Multiple disagreements eventually led the project to be split in two parts, with Wasp Star as its electric/vibrant half. The concept was largely reinforced by the primary aesthetic chosen for the cover art and the physical records/CDs: the album cover is a negative and "solarized" version of a detail of the peacock feather from AV1 while the disks represent multiple different versions of TV test-cards. The 12 tracks of the album present different themes; while it still occasionally represises the general topic of death and rebirth seen in AV1 it also explores other aspects that either didn't appear on the first volume or were approached from a different angle. With the electric guitar shock of "Playground" the album immediately defines its nature in its first seconds. The song turns around the idea of typical school dynamics being carried through adulthood and through other elements such as companies, with a slight hint towards XTC's past. As Andy declares at the end of the track: "You may leave school but it never leaves you". "Boarded Up" is instead Colin's own take on the modern world of the music industry, all given under a slightly country taste. The theme of love comes back in multiple forms and expressions, with more than half of the album being written about it: "Stupidly Happy", "In Another Life", "My Brown Guitar", "I'm The Man Who Murdered Love", "We're All Light", "Standing In For Joe", "Wounded Horse", "You and The Clouds Will Still Be Beautiful". Some tracks may include love in its lyrics but express a larger statement: "Church of Women" is a celebratory track towards women, proposing a religion in their honour while condemning misogynistic takes ("Give 'em back their house, the walls, the doors, the floors and roof, and stop trying to diet 'em on wafers and wine and some myth we're in control"), "The Wheel And The Maypole" uses the example of relationships being born and then falling apart to bring back the cycle of death and rebirth, underlined by the circular elements of a wheel and a maypole tree. "The Wheel And The Maypole" is also the album's final track and it can be considered as the official dot that ends XTC' studio career. The song was born out of two different songs that had a missing element: "Wheel" had no end and "Maypole" had no beginning. The last final act of the song unites both parts in a single melody and rhythm, a melancholic goodbye from Andy and Colin, their voices slowly fading out as the track ends. At that time both men were unaware of the band's future and left all possibilities open. Complications around multiple issues eventually led Colin and Andy to part ways, with Colin momentarily losing his passion for music and Andy working on side projects on his own or with other artists. As a whole, Wasp Star wins the test of time. With its brilliant sound and its relevant lyrics, its 25 years are only a number. I personally appreciate it a lot and find myself revisiting it quite often, as its tracks are never boring and give myself a rush of energies that just explode on bright sunny days.
