Ship’s wheel, capstan and compass fob by Matthew Wilcox & Son, early 1900s
Chatelaine with Watch. French, 18th century, gold, gilt metal, agate, rock crystal. Decorative chatelaines were worn by men and women as belt pendants and multifunctional devices for carrying utensils like watches, signet seals, and sewing accessories.
Daguerreotype of a pair of men smoking cigars, mounted in a watch fob, c. 1850
Pocket watch fobs are always cool to find. These would be attached to the pocket watch chain so you could grab the watch easily to remove from your pocket. They were common advertisement pieces as well. This one was for an oil company based out of Atlanta, Georgia.

PSA for the Barris fandom: This thing that Richard gives Thomas? I’m pretty positive it’s a watch fob. It’s a little ornament meant to hang from the watch chain (as seen in the google image). Some of them are simply ornamentation, many were awarded for athletic achievements, but some have meaning that only the owners and those already in the know, are aware of. I’ve bought a few of these (I’m a sucker for pretty antiques, what can I say) and I can’t tell you how many have nothing but initials and years engraved on them.
I just. Can we take a moment and consider that this is something that Thomas can wear openly? Sure he might get people asking after it, but it’s not at all out of the ordinary for a man to have such a thing. Imagine that Richard has their initials and the year 1927 engraved onto the back when they meet again, in remembrance. Imagine Thomas going about his life one day, running errands or waiting for a train, and a nice old woman compliments him on such a pretty piece, and when she asks after it he could show her the “TB RE 1927″ on the back and tell her that he wears it for his sweetheart.
