Princeton University's American Whig-Cliosophic Society began as two rival groups, the Whig Society and the Cliosophic Society. These Cliosophic Society watch keys date from the 1820s. Between 1808 and 1833, the Society would give such charms to members who graduated with high honors. Watch keys were used to set the time and wind up pocket watches.
