I finished watching the first season of Broadchurch today. First, I'd like to say that it's a brilliant piece of art. 8 episodes that tell the story absolutely feel like one very long movie. The tension doesn't low, and the plot goes smoothly and continuously until the very end. Second, it got me thinking, logically enough, do we really know people. I mean, without even trying to claim you know and understand all the people you've met: do we really know people who are close to us? Partners find each other cheating on them all the time, even those who love and trust and are sure that they know the person. Parents find out their children were lying them, either about some minor stuff or about some serious business, even though they were sure they have a perfect understanding. Children find out their parents can hurt them, either unintentionally or even on purpose. All this is not about 'people are bad' or 'everybody lies', not at all. I'm thinking about how different people are, how complex they are, how they change over time or how they maybe even don't know themselves being capable of something. Actually, I've been writing only bad things down, but sometimes a person can do a very good thing you've just hadn't been expecting from them. And on the other hand, how arrogant and presumptuous and self-confident they (we) are, being sure that we know another person to the bottom of their heart and understand them thoroughly. This is exactly what leads to a disaster.
