So, this came up in conversations, weirdly, while I was on a moving trip with my sister. Maine just had it’s first ever fatal shark attack in the last two weeks - a tourist from NY who hadn’t listened to the 1) stay out of Maine and 2) watch out for sharks, has Massachusetts has an exploding population of seals, and thus Great Whites, and Maine isn’t that far as the shark swims, so you know...stay out of the water. Anyway.
I love sharks. I love that they go from “awwwww, LOOK AT HOW CUTE YOU ARE” to “well, I guess this is how I die” in sizes. Deep Blue, the female Great White who is the size of a school bus, is featured prominently on my wall in my room. I love shark tanks at aquariums. One day, I want to go diving with the whale sharks. I love documentaries like Saving Jaws, where instead of “look at how many ways sharks attack” it’s “we fucking need sharks, okay, and of the two, we’re the scarier species”. A friend from Hawaii once explained it to me this way: “Sharks don’t eat people. They bite people, and then people generally die. If in the off chance you’re bit more than once, the second one is what we call a courtesy taste, when the shark doesn’t believe you could possibly taste as bad as that first bite.”
Generally, sharks don’t attack you because they know you’re human, they bite you to find out if you’re food. As great as some of their senses are, color vision isn’t one of them. They see dark and light, and that’s pretty much it. So if you want to avoid being seen as food, don’t look like a seal. In fact, if sharks understand you’re another predator, they’ll generally leave you alone. One starts following you out of curiosity, make eye contact with it, don’t freak out, and generally the shark is like “oh, my b. Swim along, fellow apex predator” and go on its merry way.
Ahem. Anyway. This company makes aquatic animal patterned swim gear from recycled plastics reclaimed from the ocean, with 10% of ever sale goes to a different oceanographic conservation program, including but not limited to: tiger shark research, nurse sharks, whale sharks, green turtles, abalone, sockeye salmon research, spotted dolphin, and environments like the Florida aquifer, and coastal resiliency. They also advocate for POC and women in the STEM sciences. The clothes are equivalent to SPF 50, which means for easily burned people (like me), less sunscreen, which has been linked to the death of coral reefs around the world, and potential issues in humans (like building up in your skin). Exchanges are free.
Short version: if you want to support women in science, marine conservation, and want to look like a BAMF shark in the water, go here.
This concludes our special broadcast.
