Something just occurred to me in the category of "experiences I feel are universal but are probably not." So here's a poll!
Have you ever been tent camping?
Yes, but not since I was a child
Yes, I have camped in a tent as an adult (possibly also as a child)
No, I have never gone camping in a tent.
We're including any kind of tent, but not RVs, campers, or cabins. Open-air camping (with no tent) or with tarp tents counts as tent camping for purposes of this question.
me 2 seconds after going into the tags for a character i like:
Reblog and put in the tags the book that is physically nearest to you at this moment.
getting lost in boston is fun because I turned around on a street corner three times and some guy yelled "hey stupid! the bus is that way!" very helpful interaction and accurate insult, 10/10 no notes
one time I walked around a building a couple times looking for a bathroom and this guy went "this bitch thinks she's on a merrygoround, where the fuck are you tryna go? bathroom? one floor down to the right behind the door that says bathroom."
My very first time in Boston. I was absolutely miserable, trying to drag my giant suitcase up a lengthy set of stairs in the pouring rain. This guy who had already reached the top looked back at me with the most pure expression of disgust I’ve ever seen in anyone’s eyes, marched back down the stairs, grabbed my suitcase, carried it to the top, left it there for me, and walked away without ever saying a word. I think about him often.
For the people in the notes going "why is Boston like this": a) the insults are a way to show you have no ulterior motives when helping someone (and don't need to be thanked or repaid), and b) Boston was settled by the Irish
also the Italians. mixing Irish and Italian sociocultural attitudes had the effect of multiplying the Sass Levels by the power of infinity, in the sense that you get all of the clever dry wit of the Irish and all of the bitchy gossipy condensation of the Italians rolled into one very stereotypically overly-friendly American package.
also worth noting that who you are to them doesn’t matter. they’ll talk to strangers like that and will also talk to their best friends like that. they’re just Like That.
More from the notes:
Oh, no, tsundere isn't the right term because we aren't trying to hide anything.
We're not about to leave you stranded but we really do think you're an idiot for getting yourself into the situation.
[ID: Screenshot of various tags. 1. I'm Bostonian and I know lots of runners. they know what it's like to run out of water on a run so they'll give out water bottles, right. every single one of them hands out the water bottle saying "who runs without bringing water what's wrong with you"
2. when my friend and i were at fenway for the hella mega tour, we were walking around trying to figure out where we were supposed to go and the guy in front of us yelled "smart people ask questions!" in the thickest boston accent, so of course my friend and i were like "he's got a point" and proceeded to ask someone and i think about him every time i'm hesitant to ask someone about something. so thanks for that random dude in boston
3. having visited boston before this is very accurate. i got separated from my group one time and a lady spent like 20 minutes helping me find them while asking me if my eyes fucking worked because how the hell did i not notice i was alone. from what i remember from that trip, the Bostonians are very helpful but also total assholes. they'll go out of their way to help you but they sure as hell ain't gonna be nice about it
4. REAL. i was in boston visiting with a friend and we got a very exasperated older woman who just came up and herded us onto the correct train, shaking her head at our stupidity the whole time
5. i got honked at in a parking lot when a guy saw me looking for my friend who moved their car lol. in a helpful way mind you. he was like OVER THERE pointing wildly
6. one of the most classic boston experiences. every single drunk old man who's ever fallen on the sidewalk has been picked up and scolded by about 3 random strangers
7. walked through the wrong door at south station and the guy said [all caps] DO YOU WORK HERE? TRAIN IS THAT WAY [end all caps] [smiling face with tear emoji] [saluting emoji]
8. Boston is the most helpful and least nice city. one time a group of men helped me dig my car out of a snowbank but they DID call me a moron the entire time. "you don't have a fucking shovel?"
9. got loss in the UMAss Hospital after an initial appointment with my rheum up here. Guy yelled at me and told me I was stupid so I must be new to Boston. then told me "the lab is over this way sweetheart". Honestly best interaction I've had in a large hospital
10. me and my brother went through a toll booth in boston in january and he was sitting in the passenger seat wearing shorts because we had been driving for 13 hours by that point. and when we stopped at the tollbooth this old lady working the booth yelled [all caps] "WHAAADDISIT SUMMER? THE HELL IS WRONG WIT YOU? PUDDAH COAT ON" [end all caps]
11. Tumblr post from @poettheythem: I work in salem and one time a person came in and told me they found the places because they were told "It's across the fucking street dipshit" and you know what it was they found us
12. Screenshot of tags: my sister was lost in a train station and had a lady tell her she looks like a tourist (derogatory). that lady then walked her to where she needed to be in the station
13. Tumblr post from @unculture: one time I was visibly struggling trying to parallel park in downtown boston and two drunk guys posted themselves on either side of the car so they could help guide me in with some of the angriest and most dismissive hand gestures i've ever witnessed. i parked perfectly and they walked off without a word before i could get out of the car
14. Screenshot of tags: that one time in Boston I thanked a guy for holding the door for me and he replied in an exasperated tone: "well i ain't gonna slam it on youse..."
15. I worked in Boston for a couple months working as an archivist and I had to walk a mile to and from work in the hottests months of the summer and every day there'd be this dude sitting at a bench on my route and he'd yell at me and go "Jesus Christ here comes the racehorse again! muthfafuckah you ever gonna learn to take the bus?" and one day i stopped and was like hey i appreciate it but there's no bus routes nearby and it's quicker to walk and he just switched to yelling "hey lookit this new yoahkah thinks they're too good for our buses." he was a very sweet guy though. he'd give out water and snacks to joggers like others have mentioned and i let him know it would be my last day the week before i left and he handed me a [all caps] HUNDRED DOLLAR GIFT CARD TO DUNKIN. [end all caps] absolute hero. bill if you're out there you're the best.
16. boston my dearly beloved. i miss the east coast man. i lived in Oregon for 4 years and it's not the same. people are all "oh a flat tire? that's really shitty. I really hope you get this sorted out!" and then they drive off where on the east coast someone's dad is already changing it for you while telling you you're an unprepared idiot. thanks man
17. Comment from @oliviagordonwrites: Tsundere city
18. Screenshot of tags: me in Boston not realizing you have to buy a Charlie card on a certain day and me not being there on any of the days you can buy a Charlie card, standing there lost in front of the T. a man walked up to me, stared me down gruffly and slapped HIS Charlie card into my palm then walked away shaking his head. I saw him again another day at the same station and he steadfastly ignored me even when I tried to call to him to thank him
19. okay I am this guy. these tourists were SHOUTING on the green line once trying to figure out how to get to Fenway and I was so fucking cranky about it as I moved seats to get away from them and their shouting I was like [all caps] YOU GET OFF AT KENMORE READ A MAP [end all caps] and then left. so.
20. when I visited boston this was very true. i was walking around with a (guy) friend and it was kinda icy and a random guy yelled hey bozo give her your arm she might fall. extremely funny callout...
21. I was walking around at night Boston with friends a few months ago and this guy was on his phone talking wicked loud. he stopped his conversation and yelled at a person behind us "what are you doing?" and there's this homeless woman just chilling. I think this dude is about to start a fight with a homeless woman and he walks right up to her and is like "are you hungry? you want something to eat?" all still in this pissed off tone and she's like uuuuuuhhh and he's like "what do you want?" so she's like "oatmeal" and he's like "no protein? just oatmeal? nah let's get you some protein" and walks her to a convenience store. most aggressively good hearted gesture I've ever seen. really thought he was gonna try and fight her but nah he bought her a whole meal with protein
22. summary of a masshole. boston mass. i am guilty of going up to tourists doing laps on the government center platform and just telling them which line to catch. if i can hear the family debate with my headphones in then you're annoying me and i'm interpreting it as a cry for help
23. a man once got frustrated with me at the train station waiting for me to tap my charlie card when it wouldn't scan and he leaned over and tapped his card and urgently ushered me through. thank you to that boston commuter for a free train ride
24. lmao I just remembered the time I Was The Bostonian (I live in Boston). there was this big group of tourists getting tickets to a train and i heard them talking about realized they were about walk through the turnstiles going the Wrong Direction (meaning they'd have to buy ANOTHER set of tickets on the other side once they figured it out) and literally threw myself in the way and shouted NO at this girl and she was super wide eyed like HUH and I went [all caps] YOUR STOP IS ACROSS THE STREET GO THERE NOT HERE [end all caps] and they just kinda blinked and went and i wonder if they realized i overheard them or if they think i just like Knew or maybe they thought I was nuts idk lol
25. it's like when your toddler is crying stuck on top the kitchen table. you have to point out that climbing up when you don't know how to get down isn't the smartest move and then you help them down. Boston understand you have to know you fucked up but we will help you this time
26. was travelling alone in my early twenties and got to logan airport with 20 minutes before my connecting flight to new york. for some fucking reason they make you go through security again between terminals and i was at the BACK of the line and started SOBBING because there was a blizzard rolling in and I was going to be stuck and broke in fucking Boston. I called my uncle and cried pathetically about this and apologized about missing my flight. The lady in front of me went "oh for FUCK'S SAKE" and pushed me ahead of her and then i was passed from person to person until I was at the front of the line. the security guy tried to tell me I couldn't do that but the dude behind me snapped "let the dumb bitch through you dumbfuck" and he did. i made my flight. i think about those rude angels all the fucking time.
27. my bike bike basket got busted and was leaning down into the back wheel. dude in an electricians truck or something got out and used zip ties to fix it. satisfied he just left without saying a word
28. i feel like i'm going insane every time i say thank [big smile emoticon] to someone in Boston and they look like I told them to jump in the river and drown
29. ma. masshole. masshole fav. i truly love my city. even that one time I went to pick up my bestie from Logan and thought. what the hell. let's get some food in Chinatown and walk around the brownstones, not thinking about traffic or parking. spent an agonizing 10 minutes tryna parallel park on one of those fuckass single lane high traffic Cambridge roads that were put there by the fucking horse drawn carriage and not a city planner who knew that the city would be huge. anyways lady behind me literally got outta her car, shooed me outta the driver's seat of my own car, and then parked for me, told me "baby you need some help", which is a nice way of saying are you fucking stupid
30. This is extemely Boston. I watched someone struggle to get a suitcase up the stairs at South Station and somebody just took it from them and hauled it up. And they were "oh my god thank you so much!" And the dude just goes "you were blocking the stairs" and walks away
31. for real [smiling with a single tear emoji]. my mom's doctors were in boston and when I first drove her there I got so lost. i pulled into a gas station and asked the guy please how do i get there. that bitch sighed for 3 whole seconds with the biggest look of disgust. marched me outside. gave me direction while pointing at tall things. made me repeat them. told me my gloves better be in the fucking card it's freezing. dismissed me with a rude hand gesture. i think about him all the time god bless

#see the explanation of ‘being rude signals that you’re not trying to scam or get anything from them’ makes so much sense #as someone who is from the Midwest where we are Very Nice #but also where like solicitors and missionaries and other annoying people will weaponize that niceness against you #I can get how rudeness could become its own social glue #whereas if a stranger talked to me like this where I’m from I might burst into tears lol #bc that would be a huge violation of the Midwestern social contract of ‘be friendly or politely ignore each other’ via @ilovedthestars

OKAY I'm curious
where do you write your fics
ellipsus
google docs
directly in the AO3 editor
notes app
physical paper
literally wherever I can (sticky notes, your hand, scrap paper, etc)
something else (tell me in tags or comments !!)
not a fic writer but I wanna press a button too !!!
would appreciate reblogs for sample size ::]
i dont "go on walks," i dont "use character sheets" and i dont "plot before writing," i raw dog it, and if it doesnt flow, I FUCKING CRY.
I was watching Starships, as you do, and had the thought that surely someone must have made a similar style fanvid for horses.
Many fruitless searches later, I found myself here.
(Also on AO3)
Realizing the writing doesn't have to be done alone and is often more fun and more engaging when you're doing it with friends is a life changing experience.
I don't mean co-writing either. I mean having a friend or two who you talk through plot ideas with, who you bounce ideas off of, who you trust to tell you if something doesn't work.
Nothing is created in a vacuum and nothing can be created alone. Sharing drafts and ideas is a vital part of the creative process and it's a really fun part too.

Tumblr mom, can I ask you a car question?
I have a 2003 Corolla (it was my Grambone’s- she made it to 101 and a half years of life) and the check engine light came on and I took it to one of those places to run the diagnostics for free and it said the thermostat needs to be replaced-
How urgent is this? The car itself only has about 90K miles on it and my regular place charges $250 baseline for a check engine light and I’m getting ready to move in a couple months and I’m afraid to ignore it but also unsure I can afford it- what should I do?
I'm gonna send this one out to the professionals cause I don't know ANYTHING about cars and my answer is usually drive it til it explodes and I know that's wrong
Hi friends, not a mechanic but I know this. Thermostat is a critical part as without it functioning the car will overheat and the engine will be ruined. THAT would cost thousands, and for a car that old, total it.
Definitely get it done, but nobody will be offended if you get a few quotes for the work. You might be able to save a bit. Just call various places with decent reviews, tell them 03 Corolla thermostat replacement, they'll tell you how much. Don't drive it in the meantime if you can help it.
Things that will make it overheat include idling in traffic, especially with air conditioner going, or driving up steep hills.
Hope this helps a little!
See this is great info! I just thought it meant the AC wasn't working lmao
We had the thermostat go on us when my dad and I were driving home to the North of the US from the South in July, and oh my god, was that the most miserable experience (even if it did lead to a modern day Odyssey level of zany adventures). If $250 is the baseline for checking the "check engine light" which most places now do for free, I would find another mechanic (if possible). But it will eventually get to the point that your engine will seize, and that'll be the end of what sounds like an otherwise really great car.
Not knowing what model of Corolla, I can't for sure say how much it'll cost, but it's generally an under $30 piece, which is much cheaper than replacing a car.

If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.
Have you heard about Gracie the giraffe? She escaped from a Texas ranch (she's since been found, fat and happy), and I was reminded of Pampe when I heard about her method of escape.
Not sure why it's a new trend among fic readers to assume if the fic has not been posted within the week it's inappropriate to comment on it, like the fic has to be hot out of the oven to give feedback for.
I got a comment on a fic that is less than a year old and it was mostly an apology for being a comment on an "old fic" and how late they were in commenting.
Just comment on the fic. Doesn't matter how old it is.
Fandom is not social media.
Fandom is not trends.
Fandom is a cross between a library and having a slumber party with your friends.
"Old" means nothing to fic.
