The images above are of the first UC San Diego watermelon drop in 1965, from the Charles H. Graves Photographs and Films collection.
The watermelon drop is a tradition marking the end of the school year. A Watermelon Queen (called the queen regardless of gender) chooses a watermelon and takes it up to the top of Urey Hall and flings it off, hoping to break the record for largest splat.
