At Seowon High School, everyone knew who "Watermelon Sugar" was. Not only because they made a tremendous amount of noise in the rehearsal room, but also because their leader, Ha Yi-chan, made sure no one ignored them. However, that year, the rumor in the hallways wasn't about them, but about the "new girl."
You had arrived just a few months prior. You were known for your infectious laughter that could be heard from the end of the hall and for that sparkling personality that made even the teachers smile reluctantly. Although you had greeted Yi-chan and her band a couple of times in the cafeteria with a cheerful "Hey, guys!", nothing had ever gone beyond that.
Until the day of the school recital.
"Watermelon Sugar" was backstage, getting ready. Eun Gyeol was adjusting the strings on his bass, Si-kook was practicing with his drumsticks on any flat surface, and Ma-joo, like a good manager, was trying to keep Hyun-yool from getting into fights.
"Quiet, everyone!" Ma-joo whispered, peeking out from behind the curtain. "It's the new girl's turn."
Yi-chan, who was trying to comb her hair for the tenth time, approached curiously.
"You came on stage with an electric guitar that looked way too big for you, but as soon as you started playing, the whole auditorium changed. You weren't just 'the new girl'; you were a force of nature. Your voice was sweet yet powerful, full of nuances, and your charisma filled every corner. You jumped, smiled at the audience, and savored every note."
Yi-chan se quedó paralizado. Sus ojos, normalmente llenos de travesuras, se abrieron de par en par. Ma-joo tuvo que cerrarle la boca.
" "That voice…" Yi-chan murmured, his heart pounding in time with your drumming. "It's… it's like the sun decided to start singing."
The encounter (and the escape)
Al terminar el concierto, estabas recogiendo tus cosas cerca de la salida trasera, aún con la adrenalina a flor de piel. De repente, una figura apareció frente a ti, tropezando con el cable de un amplificador.
It was Ha Yi-chan. He was as red as a tomato and breathing like he'd just run a marathon. Behind a column, you could see Eun Gyeol and Ma-joo cheering him on (and teasing him a little).
"You! Singer! Newbie!" Yi-chan shouted, a little too loudly. Then he lowered his voice, embarrassed. "I mean… hi, [Your Name]. You were… acceptable. Very acceptable. Incredibly acceptable."
You laughed, closing your pencil case. "Thanks, Yi-chan." You guys were great too.
He held out a trembling hand. In it was a crumpled and poorly folded piece of paper torn from a notebook. “Here! It’s my number! I mean, the band’s number. For business! Collaborations! Or if you want ice cream!”
The moment your eyes met his and you gave him one of your sweetest smiles, Yi-chan’s brain seemed to short-circuit. “I’m off! I have to… tune a watermelon!” he exclaimed nonsensically, and took off at top speed, nearly bumping into Eun Gyeol in the process.
The secret
You looked at the crumpled paper with a smile. What Yi-chan didn’t know was that you were already a fan of “Watermelon Sugar.” You had your own band at your old school and had secretly watched them rehearse several times, admiring their passion.
That night, you texted him:
"So, business? I've got a song that's missing some funny lyrics. Do you think the singer from Watermelon Sugar could help me out?"
Accomplices
. From then on, the rehearsal room became your favorite place. Yi-chan went from terrorizing you to being your constant shadow. You discovered that their musical styles meshed perfectly: your technique and finesse balanced their rock 'n' roll chaos.
One day, sitting on the floor of the room, surrounded by scraps of paper and food scraps, Yi-chan set his guitar aside.
"Hey, [Your Name]! That's enough!" Yi-chan suddenly exclaimed, jumping up from the floor as if he'd gotten a cramp.
You looked at him, confused, the melody half-hummed. "What's wrong? Did I do something wrong?"
"Yes!" "You're being too… you!" he pointed with a trembling finger, his ears turning bright crimson. "It's impossible to concentrate on the lyrics when you're sitting there with those eyes that sparkle brighter than a neon sign! My heart is racing, which is irrelevant right now."
You were silent for a second, then let out a clean, sweet laugh, the kind he loved. "Are you scolding me for liking you, Ha Yi-chan?"
He was speechless, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, completely disarmed by your frankness. "It's not scolding! It's… it's a warning. If you keep smiling like that, I'm going to have to officially declare you the "Supreme Muse of Watermelons," and I won't let you leave this room until we've written ten albums. Or a hundred!"
You stood up and walked toward him, amused by his panic.
Standing in front of him, you straightened his shirt collar." "I accept. But only if you promise not to run away every time I look at you."
Yi-chan swallowed, trying to regain his "cool guy" demeanor, though his hands were still trembling slightly. "I… I don't run. I'm just… preparing in case I have to make an emergency exit," he murmured, before giving you one of those huge, genuine smiles of his that confirmed you'd chosen the right band (and the right guy). "Get ready, [Your Name], because we're going to be the coolest, most brilliant duo in the history of music. I swear on my guitar!"
