India Plans Water Metro Services in 18 Cities Under New National Transport Push
The Indian government is preparing to launch Water Metro transport systems in 18 cities as part of a major initiative to promote eco-friendly and modern public transportation. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has finalized a draft National Water Metro Policy aimed at expanding water-based urban transit across the country.
In the first phase, cities including Varanasi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Patna, and Srinagar are expected to get Water Metro services. The second phase may include cities like Tezpur and Dibrugarh in Assam.
Inspired by the success of the Kochi Water Metro, the project aims to reduce traffic congestion, lower pollution, and provide affordable transportation using rivers, lakes, and canals. Officials said electric and hybrid-powered boats will help create a cleaner and more sustainable urban transport system while also boosting tourism.
