So many beautiful packages came in today from Waterstones! I adored the UK Neil Gaiman Reader cover, and while I was ordering, I also got this gold and indigo Hamnet and an exclusive paperback of Such A Fun Age that has its edges painted turquoise. (Bonus: a water bottle my pen pal sent me from Australia!)
Signed Saturday
I loved Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, from its mentions of Sephardic Judaism and use of Ladino to its dark, atmospheric New Haven setting. When it was first announced, I looked at the two cover designs—the sleek, black US snake, and the blue and silver of the UK cover—and decided to preorder the Waterstone’s edition, particularly as they had an option to order it signed. I didn’t know or suspect at the time that I would get to attend a Leigh Bardugo signing on her book tour later that fall, and by the time I got tickets for the signing I’d actually forgotten about this UK preorder. But I didn’t regret it: it’s a beautiful edition, and I almost didn’t go to the signing as I was feeling the impact of my at-the-time-undiagnosed pericarditis, so it was worthwhile ordering.
Signed Saturdays is a weekly series at While Reading and Walking. I’m an avid book collector, and each Saturday, I’ll tell the story of one of my signed books. Feel free to join in at #SignedSaturdays.
Signed Saturday
Back in 2013, my mother and I were obsessed with a book called The Night Circus. When I went to see Neil Gaiman speak in New York City, I was able to meet Erin Morgenstern—her signing line was short, and I was able to gush to her about how much we loved her novel. It was a different time—by the time her second novel, The Starless Sea, arrived on the scene, Morgenstern’s fame had grown significantly in the fantastic book world. I had a review copy, as I reviewed this superb novel for Booklist, but I also ordered myself one of the stunning Waterstone’s special editions, with its gorgeous marbled cover and golden bee and its gorgeous turquoise look under the dust jacket. It had the distinctive bonus of being pre-signed. I loved this novel so much that I read it twice in 2019.

I visited six bookshops today. Waterstone's Piccadilly has the dubious honour of being the only one to make me cry with a table display.
Waterstone’s, Sauchiehall Street, i.e. probably the prettiest bookshop in Glasgow.
