Wat Metta Retreat!!
Hi there UBAers!! Sorry for the spam, but some news! Southern California University Buddhist Associations (SCUBA) will be having our annual inter school retreat at Wat Metta. Come join UBA as well as the Buddhist orgs of UCLA UCI and Dharma Seals for an amazing event!!
The event takes place in celebration of Kathina, a tradition celebrated in Buddhism since the time of the Lord Buddha Himself. Kathina refers to the embroidery frame that monks used to sow their robes. When the Sangha started out, monks were only permitted to used the cloth remaining on cadavers to make their robes. However, as the number of monks increased, it became increasingly difficult to locate abandoned cloth. As a result, faithful laypeople sought to offer new robes to the monks. This led the Lord Buddha to establish the Kathina ceremony. The ceremony takes place at the end of Buddhist lent, and is restricted by time, making the offering of robes an ever more significant act of generosity.
SCUBA makes the trip to Wat Metta so we can practice generosity and learn Buddhism from the temple's world famous monks and Pali experts as well as bond with our fellow club members and sister clubs.
