with the whole waverly finance in the gutter thing, what would each of the waverlys do if they suddenly came into 100.000 pounds (no strings attached👀)?

Lady Waverly She’d act calm for about ten seconds before going full “restoration mode.” The house gets refurbished, new gowns ordered, and suddenly every influential family in Mayfair is receiving invitations to her “small gatherings” so she can show off.

Lord Waverly He’d quietly set some aside for the staff, pay some debts, try to invest the rest sensibly, railway shares, maybe. He wouldn’t tell anyone, not even his wife, until it inevitably slipped during dinner… or she found out while going through his stuff. In the end, he’d have to reluctantly hand over whatever’s left to her.

Aunt Eugenia Instantly suspicious. “Money never comes without a price.” She’d stash half in a locked drawer, donate a little to the church just in case it’s cursed. Then buy herself a cozy little house far away from Mayfair, with the rest.

Clara She’d buy books. Buy desserts, dress and toys. Then a pony she doesn’t even know how to ride. Some of it would go to charity because she’d feel guilty about the pony.

Nathaniel I think we all know how this one goes 😭 He’d burn through it in a year (two if we’re being generous). Cards, horses, “business ventures” that never quite materialize, and somehow, he’d still end up owing more than he started with.

And i almost forgot about Helena xd

Helena She’d freeze at first, not quite believing it’s real. Then she’d make a list, and another list, and probably a third one labeled “realistic expenses.”

Half would go straight to securing her independence: a small cottage, maybe a shop, something hers that no one could take away.

And then, quietly, she’d buy little things she’s always denied herself. Simple comforts.

She wouldn’t brag. She wouldn’t even tell you until much later. But you will notice the calm in her eyes, the kind that comes from finally being safe.

I understand the sexism of the time means MC will be held to a higher “moral” standard than her brother (like if he was caught kissing someone it wouldn't be considered as big a deal). But considering that her brother's actions are literally draining their wealth to the point of ruining their family (and negatively affecting his sisters’ prospects), I would have thought the strict and ruthless mother would not mince her words with him lol. He's putting them all in danger of becoming destitute!

Wouldn't she have also had high expectations of him growing up and put pressure on him to be the perfect heir? In fact I could see his character being a result of that: breaking under that pressure, indulging in vices because he couldn't live up to expectations, etc.

Yeah pretty much. But let me make it clear that the family doesn’t actually know how deep Nathaniel’s mess goes hahahsh.

And in his defense, he is not the solely reason why their finances are not doing great😅 i feel like everybody in that family except for mc, Clara and the aunt are at fault (we'll see more of that in chapter 1)

To them he’s just the lazy son who drinks too much and wastes time with his good for nothing friends. Not someone who can literally make them loose their house.😅

The mother’s partly to blame for his mess (and the dad but let's just ignore he exists) She’s strict with the daughters but lets him off easy, because her whole world runs on the idea that men can’t do no wrong.

And he's the only male heir, so she raised him like a little prince (picture Joffrey and Cersei from GOT), and now he’s just entitled and miserable.

He knoooows he’s not who she wanted him to be, so he hides in the only thing he thinks he’s "good" at.

So she takes it out on the girls because they’re the only ones she can "control". it’s the only power she thinks she has left.

About half a day’s carriage ride from London. The Waverlys were once comfortably well-off, with Hillmere Park supporting them through farmland. But now yields less due to poor management, changing agricultural markets, and the family’s long absence.

A steward now oversees operations, as the Waverlys not often visit.

Sevenoaks Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Kent, Sevenoaks was a place of quiet prosperity — neither so bustling as London nor so rustic as the far countryside. Farmers rose with the dawn to tend their fields; the church bells marked the hours. The town itself was modest but well-kept. It was the kind of place where news from London arrived a day late, and scandal took a week to bloom.
