This was recorded from what could be described as a “message line” setup on the 218 exchange in Wawina, Minnesota. At the time of recording, the 218 exchange was the last analog switch still operating in the contiguous USA, and was in the process of a cutover to digital switching.
Many former telco employees, engineers, historians, phone phreaks, hackers, and noobs dialed in to leave messages, and pay their respects, and to hack around on the system before she went offline. A conference line was also made available for real-time discussion and experimentation.
