Let’s talk Haas, if for even only a moment. I honestly feel like Wayne’s role in Adam’s life is underappreciated, and he as a character is even more underappreciated.
Wayne has a very interesting character personality in the world of Deus Ex. It’s not too overly often we see a cop character portrayed in the same light as Wayne in the DX Universe. He feels a lot of regret for what he did - which amounts to making the hard, hard decision to follow an order to keep his job, convincing himself what he did was right - only to wind up working a desk job anyways. He lost his role as SWAT Commander because Adam walked away.
This guilt manifested into justification, doing everything in his power to convince himself that the augmented 15 year old boy had turned himself into a weapon and gave them no other choice. Furthermore, it’s become bitterness toward Adam, blaming him for his life falling apart; quote, “If you’d just taken the shot”.
Wayne says something interesting when you first talk to him.
"I get enough of it at home.”
Now, such a major thing has huge, HUGE ramifications on a person’s psyche and the mental and emotional toll it can take is huge. I don’t know the full details, but if I had to fill in the blanks, I’d personally say that he lost his job not over taking the shot, but because he fell apart. Perhaps he just wasn’t fit for active duty on the SWAT Team anymore.
We don’t really get so much as a glimpse of what exactly is going on in Wayne’s home life unless we either knock him out or kill him. For the purposes of getting these screenshots, we’re just gunna help him take a nap. He looks tired.
His marriage is being strained, and if I had to guess, his partner is telling him the exact same things that Adam tells him: to put it in the past, pick himself up and move on.
However it also mentions “going easy on the pills”. I’ve no idea what he’s taking that would make her say something like that, but painkillers would make sense if only because they make you loopy if they’re something like opioids. Statements made while on opioids may be construed as inane or embarrassing in such a context.
That kind of puts a bit of backstory to Wayne that I like, and his variety of responses coupled with his highly emotional personality make him a really interesting character. His facial expressions are also pretty heart-breaking.
I’m sad there isn’t more art and writing of Wayne.
