LINER NOTES
‘Tis the season to be jolly, and rightly so. Here is a holiday album gift-wrapped with that very special Wayne King touch to enhance the pleasures of this heart-warming season. Mind you … this is the Maestro making music in his own inimitable style, with all the color and lilting tempos that have kept him America’s favorite over the years. And credit Wayne Robinson for his brilliant arrangements that blend the sounds of Christmas joy with the music of Wayne King. There’s an appropriate choral note, too, with the chorus raising its voice in the gleeful and familiar lyrics.
The songs Wayne King has sentimentally selected for this recording express the many moods of the Yuletide days … the nostalgia of I’LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS, SILVER BELLS and THE CHRISTMAS SONG … the exhilarating WINTER WONDERLAND, CAROL OF THE BELLS and LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW! … the provocative sounds of JING-A-LING-A-LING, SNOWBOUND, and CHRISTMAS IN KILLARNEY … the traditional hope found in WHITE CHRISTMAS … the moving syncopation of CHRISTMAS WALTZ. All are musical treats designed to make this an album that you’ll play again and again. The title song is the surest clue to your guaranteed listening enjoyment.HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS is more than a good wish; it comes from the king, Wayne King, so it’s a command.
Wayne and his entire gang extend a sincere season’s greeting you’ll treasure for many a year.
THOUGHTS FROM THE KING:
This was a great little find. I think this was one of $1 finds at the flea market around the corner from my house. I think the cover drew me in. There was something about the cover that said “home in New England”. (I have since in my travels seen the same cover used for a different Christmas album altogether.)
I have to say that I never heard of Wayne King (“The Waltz King”) before I bought the album. This site calls him a “Luded-out Lawrence Welk, a scaled-down Midwestern Fred Waring” which sounds pretty cool to me. A very thorough biography may be found here.
The sound is fairly straightforward big band with some interesting asides. The standout track, for me, is #5 on side 1, Jing-A-Ling-A-Ling. It’s a great, silly little ditty about Christmas shopping. There’s definitely a novelty element to the song. It could easily fit on one of the Ultra-Lounge Christmas CD’s or in a GAP commercial.
