MY MASTER THEORY FOR WBASN THUS FAR CONSIDERING EP 19:
Okay so the Appalachian mountains are nearby Witherburn, so much so that they went hiking there for the senior trip, which also implies that magnolia is nearby which matters later. anyways, my current standing theory is that the woods really do eat people, and the clarks are feeding them kiddos to ensure they don't take anyone 'important'. the sheriff is in on this as well because it grants him & his daughter protection. these kiddos become the cryptids that are spotted by mr. pickler and the like. sure, the number of missing is not equal to the number of cryptids, but there could always be some from the surrounding area we havent heard about alongside witherburn's, or a few of the cryptids could just be fake. the choir robes & ropes that they were photographed in imply a ritual for this feeding/transformation process, which further ties in my next idea: Hunter is slowly succumbing to it as well. His anger issues seem to be getting worse and worse, which is funnily enough why he couldn't really take Amelia, even though it' be convenient for the clarks for them to do that (the farrows would likely give up their shop). alongside that, he's also becoming more animalistic. the snapping his teeth on the hike and the almost running into the forest both indicate towards this. with his certainty that he is godlike, it wouldn't be out of the question that he himself is performing a lot of these rituals and kidnappings. which makes it also not out of the question that he himself is becoming the same kind of creature that he is turning everyone else into. this ties into the acquisition of small businesses, possibly trying to keep people away from the nature they're doing this in. this also ties into the graffiti, since it was written on the clarks' home as in monsters are *here* such as hunter. finally, the apocalypse in question could be the clarks turning this ritualistic stuff upon the town, or even the world.
