How do you feel about bare legs vs. hosiery? -Betty

Betty - I hate panty hose. I think they are evil, and of the devil. Seriously- there are a lot of things I can say about this topic. First, if you have nice legs, and the industry you work in sees it as permissible - then go bare legged. If you do not have nice legs, then hose it is...or wear pants / capris. There are some panty hose type things that I love. Spanx would be one. I have many dress pants that I wouldn't be caught dead in without a little Spanx support. The kind I like are footless. A word about going bare legged. If this is the direction you choose...PLEASE make sure that you have well manicured feet.

How old is too old to wear something? -F.

Well, by simply wondering if something isn't appropriate for your age kind of answers your question. If you put something on and wonder if it is appropriate - the answer is no...change clothes. Generally speaking, once we hit our mid 30's, we need to be careful about length - specifically, no longer is it OK to wear short skirts, short shorts (a.k.a. Daisey Dukes), tube tops or crop tops. As we get older, it is more stylish to show less skin. This isn't to say that you should wear a mumu - however, to be seen as sophisticated means leaving some things to the imagination.

What is a delicate way to tell someone they need a little 'support'? -M. Hey M. - well, telling someone they need a better fitting bra can be awkward. If this is in the workplace - it is easy to default to a wardrobe policy - have me come in to explain why we (as women) don't want to show too much cleavage etc. (how's that for a plug?)...some other ideas would be to give her a gift certificate for a bra fitting (something else I can help you with), organize a girls shopping trip to Chicago and plan for some time at the Intimacy Boutique (let the bra experts tell her). Or - simply sit her down in private and tell her that you've noticed men looking and sneering at her in a way that she should know about. Chances are she doesn't realize she's exposing her 'goods', and not being taken seriously because of it. Approach the situation as a friend, and in a way that you would want to be addressed if the shoe was on the other foot.

What are the changes in the past 5 years in business attire? -Sandy Hi Sandy! Thanks for this question. In my opinion, business attire has taken a sharp turn toward to casual. I believe this is with the invent of the Internet, which brought about more home based businesses - i.e. more casual work environments. We just don't get dressed up in suits for work anymore. What was never acceptable in the workplace 5 years ago - today is commonplace. An example is jeans - it is now acceptable (in most) work environments to wear a pair of dress jeans with a jacket to work. Another example is hosiery. We no longer need to wear panty hose to work (can I get an AMEN!?)...and open toed shoes. Today - there are some great open toed shoes that are perfect for work. Now - having said all that - all of this depends on the corporate culture of your office, and the industry. Healthcare (for example) is one that is still in the 'suit' phase (i.e. no open toed shoes, must wear hose or socks etc.). Law offices are another example. So - the best rule of thumb is to look at your companies wardrobe (or attire) policy. And it is best to error on the side of too conservative!
