Makaya McCraven Live Preview: 7/9 & 7/10, Thalia Hall
McCraven (right) at Big Ears Festival 2019
BY JORDAN MAINZER
We’ve been huge fans of Chicago jazz drummer Makaya McCraven ever since seeing him open for heavyweights like Kamasi Washington and Lee Fields. Over the past few years, he’s been one of the leaders in a surging jazz world both global and local, establishing his unique vision. 2018′s brilliant Universal Beings (International Anthem) allowed him to showcase four distinct scenes--New York, Chicago, London, and L.A.--with improvised recorded sessions in each location. Last February, he went into self-described “beat scientist” territory, reimagining Gil Scott-Heron’s I’m New Here as We’re New Again (XL). Last summer, he released Universal Beings E&F Sides, cut from the same sessions as its predecessor. Like the first record, it allows different local scenes to converse within and among themselves, and individual players like harpist Brandee Younger (“Beat Science”), saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (“Kings & Queens”), guitarist Jeff Parker and violinist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (“Universal Beings pt. 2″), and saxophonist Soweto Kinch (“The Way Home”) stand out. As a whole, E&F Sides is different, though, and not just because the track order isn’t cleanly organized by recording location. In general, it’s much more concise and subtle than its predecessor, standing beautifully on its own.
Friday and Saturday night at Thalia Hall, McCraven will play a seated and distanced show with support from WDCB. Doors are at 7 PM and the show starts at 8 PM; as of publication time, neither show is sold out.

— There’s a long list of “Lookin’ Good” leads who I never got around to following up with, including Eddie Shaw, Floyd Murphy (who died in 2002), Matt Murphy, Jody Williams, Rockin’ Johnny Burgin, Dick Shurman, Bill Lindemann…
Years later, it’s interesting to hear some of these voices talking about Magic Sam. I came across this archived WDCB-FM broadcast of Leslie Keros’s “Chicago Bound” show this morning. It’s a Magic Sam tribute that aired around the time Live at the Avant Garde was released, and it includes comments by Dick Shurman, Billy Flynn, and Eddie Shaw. (There’s a short segment on “Lookin’ Good” at the 38-minute mark.)
"Cuddle up close to the one you love and listen to Steve sing Sammy and see if you don't agree with me. It's Magic!" - Nancy Sinatra on Steve Tyrell's new album "It's Magic, the Songs of Sammy Cahn". WDCB Listener-Supported Jazz & Blues welcomes Steve Tyrell here 4/25. Grab your love and listen to Steve in person! http://bit.ly/1kZhu7f
