lots of words about game design ideas

in my plans for widow boss fights i’d like to implement a lot of give and take, like touhou-esque dodging segments where the boss is invulnerable and theres a lot of maneuvering, sort of echoing maybe undertale or wario land 2&3 (in different ways, those games’ combat are all very different). basically a pseudo-turn based system where you enter a scripted segment that you have to survive, and then opening the gates for the damage to go both ways. just, a very rigid version of the mario boss format

and of course it doesn’t all have to be “boss is invincible during attack, then vulnerable for a bit”. i can employ the system as an obstacle course and scrolling camera you have to overcome to reach a boss who’s fleeing as they attack, for example.

this will open up a LOT of freedom for really over-the-top dramatic music. typically games are bound to making music loop, so instead of highs and lows boss fights are typically all highs. rhythm games and like heavily scripted/choreographed scenes get a pass though because the music and the battle staging are done hand-in-hand

so like, i could EASILY write different verses aligned to boss attack patterns (well it wont be “easy” but you get what i mean) and revert to a loop when the staged attack ends and the boss enters a prone state. this will allow for a more scripted melody, with more freedom in the music composition than the previous system of “add more intense instruments as the fight goes on”

maybe i wont implement this though it all feels very stiff and even derivative of something i can’t put a finger on...

something ive been CONSIDERING for widow: no HUD abstractions. this might become problematic if i implement ammo, but i kind of like the idea of gameplay slightly varying for different states of health (see: mario, and how mario gains/loses powers according to his health)

i can’t say i CARE for (ahem) the more “abstract” abstractions that have emerged when developers try to forego the health bar: red tint, cracked/glitched screen, visual distortions...i feel like these are all beating around the bush, you might as well just HAVE a health bar if you’re going to do something that hardly interacts with gameplay

however it’d be neat to explore some stuff like slower movement when you’re hurt, and a separate sprite to show how much the player avatar is hurting. i think the main reason more games don’t have aspects like this is, well, it’s hard, and also because breaking up the moveset into “healthy, hurt, very hurt” can really get in the way of elements like jump puzzles, combat, even hitboxes.

so, like, i’m sorta at a point where i have to choose between like, a health bar at some varying level of abstraction, or a more organic way of getting hurt. of course since widow’s all about leaving the “game-y” stuff behind, maybe i could slowly start integrating in the organic way of getting hurt when the more game-breaking enemies start appearing
