ok no one asked, but do you wanna know why Miyazaki movies make you feel sad from the very beginning, even though nothing sad has happened yet?

Every single one of his movies opens with a wide scenic shot, no characters in sight. That makes us as watchers feel like we’re Alone, watching the movie. We’re reminded that we are a solitary entity in the space. We’re looking out over the landscape like we’re there, but there’s no one else on screen, no one else with us.

Then: (usually) a single, distant figure breaks the stillness. That’s our emotional anchor, the first thing we can grab onto that isn’t just space, and it’s also by itself. Now we feel Alone within the story, which is only solidified when we meet our mcs for real, and they’re almost always immediately shown to be separate from the other inhabitants of the world, whether they be literally by themself or unable to connect to the people around them.

It’s all about the image system, and this image system is a study in loneliness
