Rant about infuriating college situation utc

TL;DR: scholarship confusion bc nobody thought to send an email to me. I'll still technically be able to afford this term but I was still expecting the aid so I'm Big Mad

My college's office of financial aid is trying to say I don't qualify for a scholarship they told me I qualified for bc of [x reason]

Despite my asking if I qualified BEFORE LAST TERM because I saw the caveat of [x reason] and asked "hey does this mean I don't qualify?" AND THEY SAID IT WAS TERM-BY-TERM. AND THAT [x reason] WASN'T GOING TO STOP ME FROM GETTING A PARTIAL AWARD IN FUTURE TERMS AS LONG AS I MET THE OTHER REQUIREMENTS.

they're now saying [x reason] should've disqualified me outright and awarding me the partial amount for last term was an error on their end but they "didn't want to leave a balance on my account" which is. Interesting.

Mind you: I received zero communication about this. No emails, no notifications in the financial aid portal, zip zilch and squat. So no matter what, I'm pushing it until they at LEAST admit that this whole situation was caused by their horrendous lack of communication

I forwarded them the months-old email chain where they told me it was term-by-term. So hopefully I at least get a proper apology for. Y'know. Surprise lack of scholarship. I will admit i was a little cold in the email but that's 1.5k United States dollaroos I was mentally factoring out of the equation when I budgeted for this term. Kind of a big deal, pal.

Like I can cover my tuition for this term but like. I should have been told about this, right? SOMEONE should have emailed me? Literally anyone? Two sentences and an apology?

Ughhhhhh I have a paper due tomorrow at noon for script analysis and I do NOT want to do itttttt

I'm stuck having to do an analysis of one of two scenes and I WANT to analyze a DIFFERENT scene entirely and I'm mad about it

TBF every single other person in this class is also complaining about this paper in particular so I feel justified being whiny about it lol

Out of spite for the MULTIPLE companies actively trying to do away with physical media, I'm using a USB dvd player to rip a bunch of my personal CDs to my PC for safekeeping and funsies... and check the old unlabeled CDs that got unearthed as part of organizing the sound booth at my university.

(Long-winded story for no reason lol)

So naturally I started with a three-disc album of Wagner's Tristan Und Isolde, published by Philips in 1992. Which is 1) labeled clearly and 2) obviously not sound effects, so it's definitely not the top priority in the stack of mystery discs I promised to check over the summer.

But opera makes me happy so it goes first!

Uh.

Apparently this CD set in particular was borrowed from my local library system at some point (?) and never returned.

Still has the labels on it.

I will be informing my professor-- not because I'm snitching on the Opera Thief, but because they will find this *hilarious* after spending SO MUCH TIME impressing on us the importance of Not Stealing Sounds Because Copyright. Betcha didn't think about THIS version, didja?!

Which... Technically you can play whatever music you want to during the pre-show and after the show is over. It's considered fair game for the most part because technically that's not what tickets are being bought to see/hear. It gets a little nebulous sometimes, but you're USUALLY fine.

However.

The entirety of Tristan Und Isolde? As pre/post show music? Little much. Little more likely to have been used as underscoring.

"But Goblin," you might say, "isn't that entire thing in the public domain? You can use public domain music for your shows, right? This counts!"

... Yes? Kind of? The opera itself: Yes, in the public domain, it came out when people still gave their kids heroin cough drops. This specific RECORDING of the opera, as performed live at the Bayreuth Festival of 1966? Hahahaha noooooo. No, this recording is very much *not* public domain or fair use or any other type of Not A Legal Issue To Use for a Paid Performance.

Which means this CD set features double the Rights & Usage Crimes of your average Opera!

Oh no... This means we... We can't use it at school... Whateeeeeever shall I dooooooo...

Loving the college experience in general but would it kill my presentation partner to have done their part???

all they were supposed to do was make a 4-page slideshow based on the notes I took at the event our presentation was about (which they did not attend!)

Instead I had to fix the one slide they'd made (which I'm pretty sure was Ch*tGPT summarized from my notes. So that's really cool and nice of them to do without my permission /s), fill out the other two slides, and add the visual aid they'd not added yet. And reformat it to look halfway decent.

AGH. Thank God (/gen) that we're being graded individually bc what the hell, man

Growing up homeschooled, my mom set our schedule up to where we didn't have a summer vacation but had a lighter workload all year/could take time out to do cool stuff kinda whenever it landed in the year.

This is my first summer break of my entire life.

I put in for the day off for my one and only Weirdly Timed final and thought I was way too late (general rule is 2+ weeks since my team has a lot of deadlines and workloads need to be distributed evenly)

Thought I was gonna have to ask to leave early

Nope! Got approved and I found out at the time clock lol. Now I gotta figure out what to do between now and then bc my brain is pleasantly confused by Schedule Not Normal Schedule

At least I'll be prepared for my final! :D
