13. “we can’t go back in time, so stop trying to reverse what you said"

So i saw that line and of course the first thing that pops in my head is a post ep6 fix-it, so that’s what we’re gonna do here. Happy ending of course! Thank you darlings for the prompt 💖

“What are you doing here, Geralt?”

Geralt’s had a few months to work himself up to this moment, and yet he still has to swallow around a lump as heavy as stone in his throat. There’s not been a day that has gone by since the mountain where he hasn’t regretted his harsh words to Jaskier. Everything - everything was too silent; too empty; too sad. Jaskier had brought so much life and laughter and color into Geralt’s life and then it was gone - gone at Geralt’s hand.

He’d missed him. Desperately, all-consumingly, like one misses a phantom limb. For the last five months, there has been a Jaskier-shaped hole carved out in his soul, and Geralt had put it there. He’d never forgive himself.  

“I came because I wanted to see you,” Geralt murmurs, and the words don’t encompass the degree to which he’s missed Jaskier but they are true enough. The bard has proven himself hard to track down - part of Geralt is actually impressed it took him so long to find Jaskier. It means Jaskier had been listening, had been paying attention to how Geralt tracks and hunts and had applied all he’s learned. But it also means -

It also means he didn’t want to be found.

“Really?” Jaskier says, and his voice sounds pinched at the edges. Geralt can smell dew and pine intermingled with Jaskier’s signature sandalwood and primrose scent, and his chest tightens. Dew and pine are the smells of grief and heartache. “Forgive my disbelief. Last we spoke you made it quite clear how you felt about me.”

He’s been expecting the blow but it still hurts. “I know,” Geralt replies. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it.”

Jaskier inhales, quick and sharp. One hand begins fiddling at the cluster of golden rings that line his fingers. “That’s why you came all the way to the Redanian court. To say you’re sorry? What do you want from me Geralt? Forgiveness? Absolution?”

“I-” Words have never been easy for Geralt, but they are especially hard right now. Jaskier looks quite stunning tonight, decked out in a fine silk doublet that’s the color of amethysts, with golden buttons and detailing, and a velvet white sash. He’s got a jaunty purple hat on his head to match his outfit, and a tear-drop gold earring hanging from his left ear. It’s distracting, makes the coil of longing in Geralt’s gut tighter. “I regret speaking to you the way I did. I want you back with me,” he finishes awkwardly. “Like before.”

“Like before?” Jaskier repeats, incredulous. “Geralt, I - we can’t go back in time. Stop trying to - to reverse what you said.”

“I’m not trying to -”

“Life only moves forward Geralt,” Jaskier interrupts, and his voice sounds like it’s breaking. His eyes are earnest, the smell of dew around him growing stronger. “Not backwards. Now I am not - I’m not indifferent to your apology,” the quiet admission makes Geralt’s gaze snap up to Jaskier’s, “but it has to be for a better reason than rewriting the past.”

And then Jaskier steps back a tad; makes like he is going to leave, and - and Geralt is filled with the desperate sort of realization that he can’t let him go. Not when he’s just tracked the bard down after five long months spent aching and longing and alone.

“Wait,” Geralt says, grabbing Jaskier by the wrist and turning him back around. “What I mean is - I miss you, Jaskier. I want you with me because I like having you around. I don’t want to spend one more moment without you by my side. So please. Forgive me. Come back with me.”

He’s never talked so much. Gods he’s never talked so much. Geralt hopes it’s enough.

Jaskier withdraws his wrist from Geralt’s grasp, and Geralt feels cold dread seep into his body.  

But then Jaskier turns to face him fully, and he’s smelling like spun sugar now - hope - and Geralt dares to feel the same. “You want me? With you?” Jaskier asks softly, sounding small and oddly vulnerable.  

Geralt allows himself to a single breath. This is the moment. The one moment that will determine if he gets to walk out of this court with the bard at his side once more. His chance at happiness. “Yes. Of course I want you,” he murmurs back, earnest.

“For how long?”

“Forever.”

“And the things you said to me on the mountain - you won’t say them again?”’

“Never again. I swear it.”

Jaskier regards him for a moment. This close, Geralt can see the soft flecks of green and gold swirling around in the blue of Jaskier’s eyes. He waits, not daring to breathe.

Then finally, Jaskier’s lips curve into a tremulous smile. He smells like vanilla - like happiness. “Okay,” he says finally, linking his fingers with Geralt’s. “Let’s go. Together.”

“Okay,” Geralt says, and squeezes Jaskier’s hand.
