Occasionally as an Australian you'll be talking to someone from overseas, and you'll discover a common phrase you took for granted is, in fact, not universally known outside of our country.
Turns out casually dropping "fuck me dead" into conversation will give unsuspecting Americans an aneurism.

Imagine being on a work call with an Aussie and they suddenly announce they're gonna blow a load in response to a problem.
Not Aussie but I asked an American once if she was taking the piss ( i.e. pulling my leg, joking. Perfectly cromulent and friendly english expression)

Rifling through the tags, here's some other terms which are apparently causing mass carnage whenever they escape our borders:

Some usamerican friends of mine recently learned the Aussie meaning of snail trail (the line of hair from the bellybutton heading south). They were horrified to say the least

was reminded of that youtube channel that records footage of that bridge that scalps trucks today. one of the fascinating developments that's happened since i last heard about it is that, in one of their many attempts to stop the trucks from being can-opened, they installed a traffic light that detects when a vehicle that's over the allowed height is coming and turns red so the driver can stop and hopefully notice the signage all around that's screaming "YOUR VEHICLE IS OVERHEIGHT TURN AROUND" and avoid an accident. However as a result sometimes drivers see the light turning yellow and IMMEDIATELY start flooring it to avoid having to stop, ensuring that the roof of their truck just gets fucking annihilated instantly. Really beautiful stuff you should check it out

It DOES have a sign. It turns on when it detects something too tall for the bridge. It even flashes. And the traffic lights will go red to get people to stop when it detects an over height vehicle so they read the signs. (note this lovely example where the lights are red, because the truck thought it was better than the lights)
every time I see this post I've forgotten how clearly signposted the canopener bridge is, and every time it hits me like a truck (hitting the canopener bridge and getting the top of its trailer ripped asunder)

So it's come my attention that there are a lot of students, particularly in humanities and social sciences disciplines, who need to hear this, so here goes:
Do the readings.
Oh my God, just do the readings. I promise, it gets easier once you get into the habit of it.
What makes a good student? Doing the readings. Literally just doing the readings is enough to make you a good student.
The readings *are* the course. The lectures are just priming you for the readings. The tutorials and seminars are just how we collectively process the readings. If the readings were intended to be optional, they would have been listed under the "optional readings" heading.
"Oh but I hate this reading! The author's an idiot, they're wrong about everything" Good. Do the reading and then tear it apart in class. This isn't high school, you're not expected to mindlessly absorb things anymore
If you're in physics, do the derivations. Don't believe that any equation given to you is true. Derive it. Convince yourself that it must be true, and understand the limitations of its truth.
The very first lecture I give my students emphasizes that they do not have to accept the readings as truth from on high. They don't even have to like them! Critical reading is perhaps the most important skill I hope they take away from my course, and you can't develop it if you're not doing the fucking readings!

any good professor (and most bad ones) will take a C student who demonstrates a desire to learn over an A student who's just checking off boxes towards their degree any day.
in my experience, showing up to class prepared most days and raising your hand every so often is enough to make you the favorite student of at least 80% of your professors. in any discipline.
yes, even massive gen ed lecture classes. the prof from my 200-student chem 101 class knows me by name because i showed up to his office hours one time with an interesting question. did i get an A in his class? no. but he would kill for me

the setting is also a character. many do not know this but its true. it has a history and a future and often an arc of its own, and the other characters all have personal relationships with it
this is why college, modern, bakery, flower shop, fantasy, post apoc, etc etc AU is either boring af to me or one of the best stories in a fandom. the thing that makes or breaks the story is whether or not the setting change is treated with the weight of a Character-- how does it impact characters and still keep them recognizable? it's like you've given everyone a new bestie or enemy and they all have to live with it. how does it shape them and change them? what parts survive? what parts of them impact the setting?

This is such a great question for Elizaveta. Elizaveta is a very loving older sibling - so much so, that they traded themself to Dottore in exchange for having their younger sister saved from an illness. Elizaveta would have been described as someone quiet with a warm smile, who could often be seen helping others in a more background role. Distant, but not unfriendly.
Working with Zandik and the segments shapes them into something else, that she worries she can never return from. She knew how to enforce boundaries and wasn't afraid to speak up when necessary, but the time in Dottore's lab makes her harsh, and cold, and suspicious of others. Hostile. But in check - the same punishments and experimentation on her that made her hard and cold have also made her skittish.
At the same time, she has never been able to shake that sense of justice and defiance she has always had. She is just forced to choose very, very carefully in Dottore's lab.
But even after that, despite it all, once she has run away and become free, that kindness returns. It takes time. But it was never gone for good.
🏀 Does your OC have any skills that people wouldn’t expect them to have? Do they have a hobby or pass time that others would consider strange or weird? How did they learn this particular skill or pick up this hobby?
I think there are some reasons she's actually a good assistant for Zandik and the segments. She's very precise, and she likes to collect things. One of the things she collects is bones. These are from dead creatures exclusively. They stay well preserved in Snezhnaya's cold environment. Elizaveta finds something soothing about cleaning them and preserving them. It feels like a respectful way to honor them, wherever they originated.
It is definitely something she knows others would consider creepy, though. Zandik is delighted the second he learns of it.
But yeah the skills that come with it are precision, patience, and some scientific knowledge related to the preservation and the identification of the bones.

💗 Ramble a bit about this character!
Elizaveta is the first time in a long while (ever?) I've made an OC to ship with an f/o. Some might argue some of my SIs are halfway to being OCs (Kitsune Aura, or the super angry type SIs because I am not like that really at all fdskajhfkd) and I would agree, but this OC is fully an OC. It's opened up a lot of different options. I don't feel restricted to make her story a happy one, or to make it in line with my irl experiences or identities at all and that's so freeing for a character as complex as Dottore.
She is lowkey inspired by the Russian silver fox experiments. This is in the sense that she is a silver fox (though the study references melanistic foxes, which I represent with the dark tips to her hair and the undercoat of her hair which becomes more visible at later points in time) AND that she is experimented on! She is also the experimenter at times!
