WEAPON DESIGN IN DIFFERENT VIEWS The Wizard of OZ: Haunted Forest Weapon Development
Jordyn Lee - KNB112 - 28/03/17
This was a quick sketch so I could get to know where the blade twists around the handle. This was drawn from the side view, front view, back view and 3/4 view. By doing this, it enables me to see how the parts of the weapon should be placed. However this was rough and not very accurate. The design should be further refined as this is still unclear.

Meanwhile in a crossover alternate universe...
So yeah, been toying a bit with grenades today. They are replacing the missile launcher as the second weapon of the game. Originally I wanted both, but it all just felt redundant, seeing as they would be used to destroy the same kind of blocks, and the movement patterns of the missiles were just straight lines like most typical weapons. Grenades aren't used nearly as much in platformers, and I had them in the a prototype of Melon and found them very fun, if a bit unweildly. And that's what's up with these grenades also.
For the sake of consistency, and giving the player utility and a weapon requiring mastery, I wanted to let the player throw the grenades in 8 directions, the way I allow the player to shoot in 8 directions. Add to that, that Melon's horizontal speed affects the speed of the grenades (as it does other projectiles), it all becomes an unpredictable hazard. As you can probably tell from this clip, it's hard even for me to hit those buggers.
While I really don't want to limit the player to like a single throwing arc, I do want the weapon to feel more consistent. Making the explosions larger will give the player a bit of leeway with the precision, because right now it's way too precise. I'll keep working on it until it feels just right, but I wanted to post this small update anyway. Maybe someone has any insights regarding throwing arcs in 2d games?
I also allowed a fun little combo move where you shoot a grenade with the standard gun, probably inspired by the Shock Rifle combo in Unreal Tournament. It's pretty hard to pull off, but I like games with these hidden synergies.
