*Repost @equitynukba We have noticed a play in a renowned London theatre set in an Eastern European country. Apparently no Eastern European was included in either cast or crew in what is a production about real-life figures and historic events in an Eastern European country. On occasion, there may be a justified artistic reason to “Briticise” foreign settings and characters, but the fact that this happens in virtually every single UK production outside fringe theatre continues the complete exclusion of a huge part of the UK population from British theatre (10M people or 15% in the UK are foreign-born, 37% or more than 1 in 3 in London). We couldn't be prouder to finally announce the creation of the first-ever formal body within @equityuk to represent the interests of thousands of #ForeignBorn members, expand the #Equality debate and work towards a culture shift in the industry and society as a whole. #WeAreBritainToo, making up almost 10M (1 in 7) of the UK population, and both "nationality" and "national origin" are protected characteristics in the UK Equality Act. The entertainment industry thus has a responsibility to fight discriminatory practices and be inclusive of such talent both on- and off-stage and -screen: in quantity by reflecting actual population statistics across all levels and avoiding tokenism, and in quality by portraying communities of non-British origin authentically and avoiding harmful stereotypes.
