In the time he’d been here Eugene had begun recording faces to their numbers in his mind so as to better keep track of who was meant to be here and who wasn’t. Strictly speaking it wasn’t his job, but he knew he was the only person here who would do this as well as he could. Being that he had been tasked with redesigning the defenses he took a certain responsibility in knowing said defenses would work.
This young boy, however, that seemed to have come bouncing out of nothingness, stood as a direct contradiction to his hope that his defenses had been standing sound. The last thing he needed was for someone to catch wind of this failure.
“You mind explaining how you got through this wall of steel-enforced walkers?” This served as his greeting. “No, really. You’d be doing both of us a favor; me, because my job security rests on keeping that wall impenetrable, you, because we’re not too fond of strangers showing up uninvited for supper.”
Negan, of course, was fond of fearless, unapologetic young men like Carl and if this kid had managed to break past defenses he’d most likely would be welcomed in for the sake of his badassery. Eugene would mention none of this, however.
