Man do I love gender discussions in the Hell Tunnel.
Scott Summers
waughhhhhh... finished no home
i can't stop thinking about eunyung baek as a closeted trans girl. is anyone else seeing this...
i think over the course of the story she has too much to more immediately deal with to start unpacking that too, but still it just feels so fitting.
like. everything surrounding eunyung playing cinderella in her elementary school play, her loving that experience and people referring to her as her character instead of as herself. her parents turning away from her performance and heightening their abuse of her in the days afterward because she played a girl's role, and in the wake of that, how she doesn't let herself acknowledge that her time practicing for that play was one of her happiest memories and represses any desire to return to theater for years after that to protect herself.
her specifically playing cinderella has obvious parallels just by nature of being a kid living with an abusive family who is able to start coming more into herself outside of that environment with the support of others, but the fact that the first experience with that she has is through that role feels like it could also have gendered implications of how, just like cinderella had a night of freedom followed by being stuck with her abusive family again before she was able to more stably return to that freedom, maybe eunyung as an adult no longer under the legal authority of her parents could return living as someone like she was while embodying that performance (among other things, a girl)
even if that part of her backstory is pretty central to what makes a trans reading of her character compelling to me, its definitely not the only aspect. canonically into the present, her gender nonconformity through choosing to have long hair and style it with decorative hair ties is something she faces abuse and harassment for from authority figures even outside of her family.
to compare to another character, i feel like, while not overtly stated, hara's arc brings up the idea of gender nonconformity and making decisions about one's own body and presentation as either a method to or a possibility after escaping abusive family. hara presents progressively more masculinely as she begins to push back against her mother's control, and there is clear symbolism in her hair cut wrapping up her character arc.
even if i don't think eunyung is quite ready to come out where the story leaves off, scenes like where she pushed back against the abuse of the dorm supervisor harassing her for her hair by styling her hair even more femininely feel like they could fit into that wider motif, and as she gets to a more stable place, i think that she could start asserting her autonomy through her femininity in much bigger ways.
look at this fucking lesbian creature i got today
(so glad i backed @pepurika’s tiger tiger makeship plushie!!!!)
this took me so long and still immediately after doing it im still questioning if i shouldve put some characters here that arent and vice versa lol even w 36 instead of 24
but!! just for fun send me your bingos for this :)
(btw cyan is Top Favorites, orange is just getting into/stopped in the middle of and need to get back to but still enjoy or am intrigued by the character, yellow is old and its been a while since i’ve seen directly so basing off of memories and sentiments from when i was younger)
i lvoe when there are women. also when characters are sooooo autistic. also genderless supernatural entities who still essentially could probably be called lesbians. also that supernatural butch is also like. some evil goofy charming cat seal thing. also
hope you understand.
its interesting to me theres a significant amount of webcomics i really enjoy made by finnish and also scottish creators. i think its just largely a coincidence of getting really into one comic and then that creator being (if not now then at least in the past) part of a larger friend or professional circle or w/e but nonetheless its vaguely interesting how things like that happen. also with the finnish webcomic creators thats like. when i was fucking 12 on smackjeeves some of the first comics i ever got really into lol, and then on tumblr a couple of those creators even followed me back then on old accounts?? and its been cool seeing that whole group (again not necessarily an actual group but just a lot of different connections that lead to this being a pattern in what comics i’ve read ykwim) grow more successful and make works that have grown with me that i enjoy all the more, and its super cool rediscovering old comic creators i used to enjoy that i lost track of in whole new contexts and works too
