Ideas about Genos’ arc
It seems so obvious now, but I have a new guess. In many of the posts I’ve written I’ve been frustrated because I haven’t been able to explain what Genos really wants, other than, well, everything.
It’s obvious to me that his revenge quest has at least as much to do with his unresolved grief manifesting as anger as it does his desire that no one else experiences the same horror.
It’s obvious to me that he wants he old life back, and yet he knows that can’t happen.
There was something I read somewhere, I don’t have the reference for at the moment, (please let me know if I got any of the details here wrong) but allegedly Genos cries oil. We know this because when Saitama confesses to Genos how lonely he is Genos gets really depressed and cries and tells Saitama to wait for him to be stronger so that he won’t feel so alone. That moment rattles around in my head quite a bit. Another thing that’s been rattling around is his upcoming battle against the “extended family of darkness.” And recently I’m exploring two ideas that could have some validity.
1. Genos is depriving himself of community until he can be “good enough” to never lose it again, which by his standards is very near perfect. I think part of the reason he’s so agressive with people is self-defensiveness from not wanting to be hurt again. Not wanting to experience loss again.
2. Genos wants his family back, but since that can’t happen more than anything in the world I think he just wants family, community, relationship. He would do anything for Saitama not just because he sees Saitama as the key to being able to be “strong enough” but also because Saitama ans Dr. Kuseno are the closest thing to family he has. I think that Genos can relax a lot more around Saitama (not that he’s ever really relaxed but the alternative is coldness, defensiveness, and disinterest) than even Dr. Kuseno at times because of Saitama’s invulnerability. And this isn’t even about shipping, this is about something I think is a pretty significant unmet emotional need. Humans are social creatures after all.
So, what’s the result?
It’s been getting more and more clear that Saitama isn’t meeting Genos’ emotional needs. Saitama is taking Genos for granted. Saitama may be noticing Genos’ improvements but he’s not validatinf them to Genos, at least not in a meaningful way to Genos. Their communication is getting worse. Saitama effectively, almost passive aggressively, kicked Genos out without so much as an satisfactory explanation (I’m not saying Saitama owes Genos an explanation for wanting some space necessarily, but just look at if From Genos’ perspective.) Genos still isn’t even close to fulfilling his promise to Saitama (that he’ll get stronger so Saitama won’t feel lonely), and Saitama doesn’t seem to be waiting around for Genos to get stronger. He repeated the pattern he began with Genos with Flashy Flash starting with tea and conversation and ending with a spar, something that until this point has been almost exclusively Genos’ privilege. His fears of inadequacy that he must be fighting after nearly dying during the MA arc and being saved by King (King! Not even Saitama) seem to pale in comparison to his new found fear of abandonment and the spouting seeds of resentment.
It’s really looking like he’s about to lose his family again. I’ve speculated before that Dr. Kuseno’s possible vulnerabilities and the impact that could have on Genos could be an import part of his arc. Seeing how things are going now I would be sad but not surprised if Genos lost either Saitama or Dr. Kuseno for a moment (possibly even both but at different times) I would be devastated if he lost them both at once. Honestly, I think that if he felt like he lost them both at once he could monsterfy. I think a lot of theories about Genos monstefying underestimate his internal strength and values quite a bit, but I do think this is a serious vulnerability for him.
I don’t really have answers though.

cap 201 Flashy
I can't stop thinking that it's in some ways a regret for poisoning Sonic and leaving. Them killing each other is something that would happen sooner or later, as they are both killers and Flashy has cut ties. I don't feel like he regret is for not killing Sonic, but not being able to stay there in his last moments.
He didn't stay to "finish the job" because seeing Sonic's lifeless body is his biggest fear, Flashy feels like a coward.
