Merry Christmas @filthybookworm! I hope you enjoy your gift and have happy holidays (:
Thank you to @lilhawkeye3 for setting up the @starwarssecretsanta, this was such a joy to write!
You watch as the snow begins to slowly fall to the ground outside the transparasteel window from your shared office. It’s a gentle snowfall, a beautiful and welcome sight as the winters on this planet that your assigned base sits on do not last long enough.
A slight frown forms on your face. Two days away until Christmas and you won’t be able to go home for the holidays, there was too much work to be taken care of as a Captain in the Alliance to Restore the Republic.
Another holiday away from home.
You love your job, knowing that all the hard work will be worth it for future generations to live in peace, something the Galaxy has been lacking for a long time. The second Death Star may have been destroyed but the road to the New Republic was still far away, which meant sacrifices from not only you, but your fellow rebels. Still, you miss your home planet and family.
Noticing your distracted gaze, Commander Wedge Antilles tosses a small wadded up flimsi at your desk, taking you out of your thoughts.
Looking up, you see a grinning Wedge sitting at his desk near yours. “Something on your mind, Captain?”
“Just thinking,” you respond, tossing the flimsi back at him.
He laughs, catching it easily. “You’re usually not so distracted, is everything okay?”
You sigh, sitting up a little straighter in your seat attempting to appear okay. “It’s nothing.” He cocked an eyebrow, giving you a knowing look. Unable to lie to one of your closest friends, you turn to face him better. “There’s a holiday from my home planet that’s coming up. It’s one of my favorites, honestly.”
Wedge scoots his chair closer to where your desk, forgetting about the datapads on his desk. “Let’s hear about it.”
It’s your turn to grin as you relax in your seat, excited to talk about the holidays. “Well, it takes place towards the end of the year during our winter time. It’s called Christmas, it’s a day dedicated to spending time with your family and loved ones. Gifts are exchanged, delicious meals made and ate, the works.”
He nods, intrigued. “What else goes into celebrating it?”
“Each home does things a little differently, but my family does a mix of things. In the morning we eat a nice breakfast together and do some baking while listening to our favorite holiday music.” You see Wedge listening eagerly, making you smile as nostalgia takes over and you think back to your favorite Christmas memories. “When I was younger we’d play in the snow and make snow people, just enjoying the outdoors. After that we’d go back inside and warm up with mugs of hot chocolate. We’d make a special seasonal dinner before settling down together and exchanging gifts. Nothing beats the cookies we made, and how much fun it is to decorate them. I think that’s what I miss most, honestly.”
“That sounds really nice, Captain. I’m sorry you’ll be missing it.”
You shrug, trying to appear indifferent. “The work we’re doing here is important and requires sacrifices from all of us. Besides, there’s always next year. I’m okay. Honest.” You pat his arm, showing him you meant it as you turned back to the unfinished reports on your desk.
Report to the D-3 briefing room.
You frown at the message. Leave it to Wedge to be vague about what he needs. Walking down the halls of the base, you make your way to the small briefing room, wondering what Wedge wants.
The door hisses open, a sweet scent immediately filling your senses. Stepping inside you can’t help but smile at what you see. Wedge stands at the large meeting table, a proud smile on his face as he holds two mugs in his hands.
Excitement fills you as an assortment of different types of cookies, flavors of icing and various decorating tools are sprawled out on the table. He walks over to you, handing over one of the mugs. The mug warms your hands as the smell of hot chocolate hits you, reminding you of home.
“I know it’s not the same, but I wanted to bring some of the holidays to you,” Wedge says.
“Called in a favor or two. Do you like it?”
It’s hard to contain the smile and excitement. “This is perfect Wedge, thank you.”
He returns the smile, happy to be able to bring in a little extra cheer as he clinks his mug against yours. “Merry Christmas, Captain.”
Listening to the playlist of holiday songs Wedge compiled from the holonet, you and him spend the next few hours decorating cookies. Between the decorating, hot chocolate, and singing along to Christmas classics, you can’t help but be glad that you get to spend the day with your best friend.
It may not be home, but you wouldn’t trade this for anything.
