It's miserable outside. This made me chuckle the other day when I saw it. Thought it would be good for a laugh on a rainy hump-day. And it's sort of appropriate for #wildlifewednesday. Airbnb is the largest provider of rental and vacation properties and they don't own a single one of them (I need to fact check this). This "butterfly bush" - located on the beach of Pirate Bight, Norman Island - is fluttering with activity. I put quotations because I don't actually know. It's really close. There are some characteristics that I recognise and some that I don't. But, simply put, it's a flowery (likely fragrant) bush and it's covered in butterflies...so there you go. @sharonburrill could provide more insight. This set of pictures comes from one of her adventures. Norman Island is fabled to be the inspiration of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. As contested as this claim may be the island does have a documented history of shipwrecks, mutinies, and stowage of pirate booty...so I've learned. . . . . I had to look this one up. I realise I've missed Pollinator Week. Regardless, here is a bumblebee doing his thing for #wildlifewednesday. The yellow flowers of this Staghorn Sumac - Rhus typhina - give way to red, berries...so long as they've been pollinated. These berries are edible and are often used in sweet and tarty drinks. Because of bees (amoung other contributing pollinators) these sumacs bear fruit naturally in the wild. Without them they would not. The pollen from the male needs to be carried over to the seed of the female by some means. The pollen easily sticks I to a bee as it nibbles on the sweet nectar. This is a painted turtle and her nest found on the same project as the little snapper I discovered from a few posts back. I thought the camoflauged border was a nice touch. Painted turtles nest from late may to early July, digging their nest in loamy or sandy soil in sunny areas. That's coming up. Keep your eye out for them. They are currently not classified as endangered like many other turtle species in Ontario but that doesn't mean they aren't at risk. They are impacted by the very same reasons - habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation. While working on this property I kept this in mind.
