Deep Brown
The simplest way to differentiate between English and Scottish beers is to look at hoppiness and yeast character. Scottish ales are marked by a cleaner yeast flavor and a simpler hop profile. Gigantic’s new wee heavy fits right in there. Between the rich, walnut flavor of the malt and the subtle yeast, Mons Meg could be confused for a strong brown lager.
If you pick up a bottle, don’t forget to check out the Loch Lomond song the beer is paired with. As the name suggests, Loch Lomond makes Celtic shaded folk music, in a good way.
Atholl Brose (Strange Land)
Brewery : Strange Land Beer : Atholl Brose Style : Wee Heavy / Scotch Ale Variance : Brewed with Honey, Oats, Whiskey, and Oak
9 / 10
Up until about a year ago this was hands down my favorite style of beer but due to lack of variety on the market and lack of quality I had to unfortunately move on to other styles. This beer may have done the impossible and re-sparked my love for the wee heavy because this is a fucking amazing example of the style done to damn near perfection. Seriously though, it’s like hating Star Trek your entire life because it is clearly the nerdiest of the space franchises but then seeing the 2009 reboot movie and absolutely loving it and becoming a super fan. Actually, that example made no sense because I never hated scotch ales at all but hopefully you get the idea of what I was trying to say. So basically, an Atholl Brose is a signature Scottish drink mixing all the ingredients that went into this beer into a mixed beverage so now it seems that I have to taste one of those to get a proper comparison so who want’s to be my bartender? No takers? Ok then, moving on. A super smooth mossy honey flavor starts things off with some oak and sweetness before those mild whiskey flavors mix in just adding some slight boozy notes mixing with even more honey before ending with a perfect blend of all of those flavors. This is just about as good as it gets when it comes to the style so make sure you pick up a bottle if you are looking to broaden your horizons or if you just want to drink a super solid brew. This is for drinkers of all ages (21+ unless you like in one of those weird 18+ countries) so make sure you give it a try because I can assure you you’ll fall in love with it.

Soul Shakedown Party (Sun King)
Brewery : Sun King Beer : Soul Shakedown Party Style : Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy Variance : Rum Barrel Aged
9 / 10
Ok two things. First of all, is it just me or does Soul Shakedown Party sound like it should be the title for the next Every Time I Die album? Secondly, what the hell am I drinking this out of? I feel like a glass full of Monster Energy Drink or Rockstar should have came out of this interesting aluminum vessel but instead and incredible wee heavy did. To be clear, I prefer this beer over that poison energy crap any day and honestly, I prefer this beer over a lot of other brews too. This is my first beer from Sun King so my hymen is officially popped and lucky for you readers, there is no blood or embarrassment involved in it. This has a nice mossy molasses flavor to start with a heavy sweetness before some orange zest and rum flavor mixes in bringing both a sweet and boozy flavor before ending with a nice toffee flavor to close. So after a brief Google session, I found out that the name of this beer is actually a Bob Marley song which I am all about because I love me some Buffalo Soldier and One Love. Did you know his real name was Robert Nesta Marley? Fucking nerd. When it comes to scotch ales, this one is damn near the top of it’s class with it’s interesting aging and amazing flavors so make sure you snag a what-ever-the-fuck-this-is and drink one down. If you are fan of the style even half as much as I am or if you are just looking for a brew to change things up from the hop bombs you’ve been drinking lately, make sure you pick this beer up while you can because all of the accolades it's received are well justified and the hype is real. If this is your first wee heavy, no. Just no. You are not ready for a beer of this caliber yet you pussy but just work your way up and make sure Donald Trump doesn’t grab you and you’ll thank me later. Bigly.

Local’s Stash : Bourbon Barrel Aged Scotch Ale (Crazy Mountain)
Brewery : Crazy Mountain Beer : Local’s Stash : Bourbon Barrel Aged Scotch Ale Style : Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy Variance : Bourbon Barrel Aged
8 / 10
HoooooooWeeeeeee! This shit packs a punch! If I didn’t know better I would think that this beer was brewed by Jameson instead of Crazy Mountain because of how boozy it is but it works better than baby powder on Aidy Bryants rolls so hats off to you. This beer has inspired me to rip off my pants and boxer briefs and sport a kilt because I have a hidden passion for wee heavies and this one just so happen to make me smile from the inside out. That sounded way weirder than I intended it to but I stand by it just like Hillary stood by Bill after having his “cigar” smoked by another woman. Now if you can, read this next part then close your eyes and imagine it to get the full experience and thank me later. Imagine putting on a swim cap and diving into a barrel of whiskey with your friends during the Olympics and winning gold for performing the most amazing synchronized swimming routine before a bottle of booze that looks like Evander Holyfield (1 ear and all) comes by and slugs you in the gut knocking you out of the barrel before landing on your ass in a pile of spongy moss and taking a little bite just to see how it tastes. After reading that back, I’m pretty sure that is the most accurate description I could give this beer so I’m sticking with it. If you love a nice glass of bourbon on the rocks make sure you pick up this brew because the boozy notes and scotch ale tastes are powerful yet balanced enough to have you polishing off this 10.5% ABV brew in one sitting. If you are new to the style, this is not the ideal starting point because this will bend you over and have it’s way with you with it’s strong taste but for you pros, grab it, love it, drink it, and tell your friends. Prost!
