Hello! Just wondering if I could ask a few questions about making a fanzine and organising recruitment of artists / timescale?
Hi!
Sure! The Anime-niacs Zine was my first I managed and moderated, but I can tell you what I learned.
Collect inspiration and check out other zines. If you are not closely familiar with zines, check a variety of them, to get a good idea of what you want and what is possible within the medium.
Make sure before you start the project you have software/sites available to edit the zine together and manage communications with the future participants. (or have friends who can help you)
I used Adobe InDesign, but there are free and online alternative too, like Affinity Publisher, Canva or Scribus. I only had digital release for the zine, but if you want yours printed check out what parameters you need to keep in mind.
For communications, I made a Gmail account so I can reach out to the applicants via email.
For day to day communications on the project, I made a Dicord server too. It helps to keep things in one place. It also open ways to have a more chill atmosphere and to people to befriend each other.
If you know what you want and how you want it, make an interest check post first. This helps you gauge interest and raise awareness about your project on socials.
The applications: I used Google Forms for my applications, it's the best. You can even make an Excel sheet organizing the applications.
Make sure you ask for basic contact information like email or a discord handle. Also ask for a few examples of their artwork or gallery, to gauge their skill level.
My zine, I thought would take 3 months to finish. But my personal life and the participants schedule didn't allow for that. Make sure you calculate the circumstances out of control. Always add plus 3-4 months.
During the project, make sure you have at least monthly check-ins, that helps the participants keep their works on track.
Always communicate. Update your participants often about the progress of the zine. Even if just to say, you were too busy to make advancements, it's always better than leaving everyone hanging.
Have multiple mods on the project, so things don't move to halt just because one person got too busy.
Keep outside interest up on socials during the project. Share little works in progress and teases. To build up hype before the release, have a few day countdown to the release with artworks.
Im sure theres more to keep in mind but I hope this helped! 💖
