i'm watching the 90s street fighter movie for the first time

i genuinely yelled NOOO at the screen as vega was about to remove his mask because i love masked characters and that's an actually good looking mask in a martial arts movie for once

and then it turns out jay tavare who plays vega is just. an immensely beautiful man???

like. goddamn

#the eyelashes the bone structure the bod the presence #i see no reason why he shouldn't have been an action movie star in the nineties. gonna guess racism #also sidenote i have no clue about the street fighter franchise. i don't know how any of these characters are supposed to look or behave #weekend flicks

i'm finally watching The Return (that ralph fiennes last-half-of-the-odyssey film)

the scene where the ithacan herders ask him about the trojan war and what odysseus was like (bc obviously they don't know they're speaking to odysseus) and he's about to tell them and goes

but his voice trails off so he never finishes that sentence and MWAH it's so good

odysseus was.

#we're only twenty minutes into the film so i'll withhold judgement #but if the whole 'let's do myths *realistic*' just this once means it's like. haunting and character based i'm into it #also i am forever super weak for ralph fiennes performances too so. declaring my bias right away #weekend flicks #adaptations tag

i finally got around to watching beware of the car! (beregis avtomobilya, 1966), a soviet crime comedy, and i have never laughed as hard during a car chase, it's got so many fun gags and stunts

i think at some point i'm gonna have to make a list of films i imagine lupin iii fans would enjoy. i think if you like lupin and zenigata you're primed to enjoy this story of a doofy thief and doofy police inspector unknowingly befriending each other doing shakespeare community theater together. it keeps being funny even after the jig is up and they have to figure out how to navigate their new dynamic (including drunkenly proclaiming their love for each other)

i'm watching a 1950 noir starring ricardo montalban and he is luminescent and SO handsome

#his character has a hispanic name and he's got his trademark accent but the (hollywood) movie does not exoticize him at all?#which is a pleasant surprise for this era. i'm gonna have to read up on this film's production #he's just another clever noir investigator #weekend flicks

argos scene!

humanity as a whole are absolutely incapable of allowing an argos death scene where odysseus only watches from afar and that's what beautiful about us

okay i fully understand the limitations they are working with when they use real animals but aww that does not read anything like a 20+ year old starving, mangy, dying dog. that's perhaps a slightly senior but beautifully hale looking (ah those gorgeously well-kept teeth and clear alert eyes!) dog that they've rubbed a tiny bit of baby oil on

#if i did a dental on even a ten year old dog with teeth that nice i'd congratulate the owner #obviously they used a trained dog and professional animal trainers want their animals healthy #if it was up to me i'd at least have given that dog a sticky crumbly treat beforehand and maybe put some globs of hydrating gel in its eyes #get some fake crusties going #weekend flicks

the thing about a 60s russian "woman pretends to be a man to go to war, gender exploration and homosensuality ensues" movie (you know, your basic mulan setup) is that all the guys are already kissing each other in camaraderly soviet fashion

#like she gets to experience so much more casual intimacy with other men as a man than she ever could as a woman. super interesting #also the napoleonic era uniforms REALLY add to it #the movie is BALLAD OF A HUSSAR btw. it's a MUSICAL and i'm having a lovely time #weekend flicks

i'm watching the silent film maciste in hell (1925) and i'm obsessed with prosperina's costume
