How did you go about developing a ferret language :? There aren't a lot of resources on non-auditory forms of language in speculative xenobiology.

One of their core design elements that I base new ferret traits on is that their primary sense is touch, so having tactile language was an extension of that. Also, one of the main human characters for RttS is Deaf and I’ve spent a lot of time reading and watching material made by and about Deaf people for her, so non-auditory language was on my mind already. If you’re interested humans also have tactile sign language, used mostly by Deaf blind communities (here’s a documentary featuring a woman who uses it) though, from what I can tell it’s not quite in the same style as ferrets-- human tactile sign mostly involves feeling the hand motions of the other person as they sign, where ferret sign language is more built for touch from the ground up. If you’re speaking to someone in ferret tactile sign, 90% of the time you are actively touching the words onto them and not signing away from them as they read your hands.In short if you're looking only for references about xeno language specifically, it might be time to step back and look at some of the cool stuff humans have done!
