The Weird Heroes line was an attempt to find a Seventies audience for pulp-style weird heroes like The Shadow.

Nightshade was a strange triune heroine who was simultaneously a stage magician, voodoo priestess, and some kind of vampire. Nightshade waged war on a sinister Satanic corporation bent on global dominion.

Let’s face it, anyone who would write comics about the celibate hotness of Nikola Tesla or the deathbed competitiveness of Louis-Joseph de Montcalm resides impressively on the not-normal side of things. So for possibly inventing the pioneering genre of satiric-revisionist-historical webcomics, we’d like to thank Kate Beaton for being a shining example of why #WEIRDWINS and we hope she enjoys her ParaNorman zombie.

Only kids who are geeks grow up to create totally pioneering shows about geeks that are by geeks and for geeks (known in the industry as the “geek hat trick”). They might also take it upon themselves to unofficially become the official curator of the nerd Internet (which is A LOT of the Internet, it turns out). WEIRD HERO: GARETH BRANWYN

Kids who grow up building any weird thing they can think of become grown-ups who teach anybody with a brain and maybe hands how to build park benches out of pallets, robots out of audio CDs, and (most importantly for the future of humanity) delicious bowls out of chocolate. As an avatar of imagination, and because he inspires us to remake the world any way we’d like it, we think Gareth’s a shining example of why #WEIRDWINS and why he is someone who should unearth a ParaNorman zombie.

Weird kids have a way of becoming really interesting grown-ups—the kind who tell stories about convenience store clerks, angels of death, and supervillains with audio fixations. Kevin Smith's wild yarns are delivered on his own terms, as independent films, comics, webisodes, podcasts, and eight-hour-long audience Q&A sessions. Which is all to say, we think Kevin's a shining example of why #WEIRDWINS and is someone who should unearth a ParaNorman zombie.
