In this nondescript, (except for the statue), Wales flat, you’ll find the Baked Bean Museum of Excellence. It’s a privately owned museum curated by Captain Beany. 

This is the former Barry Kirk, who became obsessed with baked beans.

He has legally changed his name to Captain Beany. 

So obsessed is he, that he even has beans tattooed on his head.

The tiny museum is in the captain’s 2 bdrm. flat. 

The museum is open Mon. - Fri. from 9 to 5. Since it’s a Council Flat, admission can’t be charged, but Captain Beany gladly takes donations b/c he does a lot of charitable work. 

He may even share some beans on toast with you.

In Turkey, there’s a pottery store in a cave that sells lots of beautiful plates and things, and within this store/cave is the Avanos Hair Museum. 

You can bring back a lovely souvenir of your trip. 

And, then you can wander around and look at all the hair. It all started when the owner asked a friend to leave him something to remember her by, and she gave him a lock of her hair. 

This is the hair of visitors. Here is a young woman hanging up a lock of hers. They’re attached to every available surface and the museum provides paper, pencils, pins, and scissors if you want to leave your own.

The proprietor will cut if for you, if you want.

I can’t tell if this is creepy or just plain weird.

You can have the most amazing experience at the Dennis Severs’ house in London. He lived as if it was the 18th cent. (No electric, etc.) and called the experience a “still life drama.” You are a time traveler, in a cat & mouse game. The deal is that you interrupt a family of silk weavers- there’re unmade beds, half-eaten meals, and you hear them, but you never see them. They move to another room, as you enter. (You do see their black cat.) It’s the weirdest thing- like you’re chasing ghosts. The home is just as Severs left it, (deteriorated), and is curated according to his original plot. You even get to sit by the fire in the room of your choice.

The Gopher Hole Museum in Torrington, Alberta charges two dollars admission and it is worth every penny. It had been on our bucket list for some time and it did not disappoint.

The entire concept is bizarre (really all taxidermy is) but it is presented completely without irony and so must be taken in as folk art of a very unique sort. Every business, moment from history and local organization is represented in a stuffed gopher diorama.

My only regret is that I did not think to purchase any post cards in the gift shop. Next time.
