It took a bit of doing and snooping at her parents house to get the face right. She still wasn't sure if her mother really noticed anything wrong, only she was very happy to see her. Lucy had to disappear the food she kept giving her as she hadn't quite figured out eating again.

From there, it was simple enough to find Antonia. She could find anyone really if she wanted. Toni was by far the easiest, she felt the tug on her rib before the rib even existed again.

She didn't bother with the door, just walked through the wall and right into the living room and stood until Toni appeared, a wet spot growing on the floor underneath her feet. It was better than getting the couch soaked, she reasoned.

Lucy didn't know what the right greeting was whenever you managed to shirk death, Oblivion, and return as something altogether not quite Right.

"I thought I'd make dinner...but I don't remember what you like." In fact she was having trouble remembering quite a bit, she hoped that being around Toni would help with that. Walking through her childhood home certainly did.

“What do you think of Antonia? Do you genuinely care about her?”

“I think she’s a delight, really. Nice to have someone so sensible about, even if I do worry about her potentially snapping like a rubber band, someday, and getting her bones dusted by someone she shouldn’t have stepped to. Then again, she’s honestly pretty good about not doing that... or at least surviving when she does. And that’s also refreshing.

“As for the caring bit, that’s always something of a leading question with no good answer. We’ll say I care about her in the way that counts for me, and leave it at that. 

“Though I wonder if she’d say the same for me! Hosting a party, of all things, and not even inviting me along to meet her friends.... Tsk tsk. I might have to go over and piss on her sofa, sometime soon.”

27. A kiss in greeting

It was not a widely known fact that kissing was by far the easiest manner of touch for her to manage, but it was not difficult to discover either with just a bit of thought. Lucy was tall, taller than most, she did not have to have her space invaded, didn’t need the uncomfortable sweltering heat of a live body near her, to show affection with a kiss.

Antonia, bright as she was, figured it out quickly though Lucy couldn't pin point where in their youth it'd become her custom.

She waltzed into the house easily, like it had never been something she struggled to do, and with only the smallest pucker in her brow that told Lucy that she was frustrated with something. It could be anything, but it usually wasn't anything. It was usually Purgatory related or adjacent to it; pick a celestial kingdom, and Antonia could find something in it to be frustrated about.

Still, she'd offered her cheek to Lucy and got a peck right where her cheekbone fell under her eye, the same spot she'd done so for years, the same spot she'd watched her friend rub on occasion when she was absently thinking of Lucy. "Toni," she said. "Are you hiding out for a bit?" She asked with a laugh, gesturing to the house at large. "I haven't seen it run out of space yet, but at this rate we may find a limit." From behind them, they could hear Zaire and Gabriel bickering good naturedly over the merits of some particular flavor of porn. "Maybe we can sit on the porch instead? This is round three of that argument."

"Oh we'd be having more fun if that were the case, Antonia," he says, oily and ingratiating, as he looks over her shoulder. "What you got performance issues when people watch?"

He takes a step closer, one hand wrapping over her shoulder while the other points at the screen. "There, pull that up -- all those lightning storms, that's one of my siblings I'd bet. One that ain't been round here a while either if they are still causing all that noise."

He pushes off her shoulder and away from the chair, thoughtlessly hard. "We're going to Nashville!"

It took an entire day before word got back to Dantalion.

That was, in his opinion, entirely too long. The small team of stalkers (”They’re called security.”) he’d set on her several years ago had, apparently and in his opinion, become unfit for the job.

They soon found themselves unfit for any job.

The only sign left for him by the time he arrived with the new security force was a blue and silver necklace with a copper backing, tucked away in a jewelry case on the vanity. It was a sufficient one, however, and he relaxed at once.

“Let me know when and if she comes back, gentlemen. Immediately.”
