there's a feigned look of surprise on merlin's face. despite being busted, he chooses to act in a very merlin way and looks over his shoulder, pretending he doesn't realise arthur is addressing him and not some imaginary person behind him. ❝ what, me? ❞ he shakes his head innocently. truthfully, it's clear he doesn't bother to be too convincing about it, since they're both very clearly aware he's lying. more so, this isn't even the first time he has heard something of import that day alone, and merlin has to wonder if there's something about him that makes it much easier to stumble into secrets. perhaps it's because he's the only one that seems to actually be listening?
