22 what makes me proud and ashamed of my country.

I will start with what makes me ashamed. I'm ashamed of the Flemish separatists in my country. Especially the racist and xenophobic ones. I get part of their plight. but I dislike it when people shove me in the same category as them just because I'm Flemish. I hate that I don't like saying "I'm Flemish" anymore for fear that people will assume I'm like them. I hate that I can't say I'm proud of my region, because of them. I am especially ashamed of their historical reconstruction and propaganda.

Besides that obviously I'm ashamed of my country's colonial history. The more you learn the more you realise that yeah Belgium is really "the asshole" country of the 19-20th century ahahaha.

now what makes me proud. I am proud of our beer, cheese (yes our cheese) and chocolate. Best in the world baby! proud of our waffles too ofcourse although I don't eat them that often. I'm proud of our singers that make it world wide, and our athletes. but I'm especially proud of Belgium's ability to "improvise, adapt, overcome" I mean longest time without a government (570 days) and we turned out fine! I am proud that the various peoples living in Belgium manage to come together and find compromise to still make us all live in a happy country. :)
